An interesting article about MCPS student population

How are people defining "quality of life" here?

These kids are illegal. They can't grow up and work here legally. Anchor babies, unfortunatly yes but not illegal kids.

And you realize that all these illegal aliens cost not only in FARMS but ESOL now too. We have to pay teachers to teach kids English on our dime in school. Can you list any other countries in the world that not only allow illegal aliens to go to school in their country for free but take their citizen's taxes and pay for an entire department to teach the kids the language spoken in their country? Do you realize how insane that is. Do you see our test scores going down, our ratios going up, our schools doing poorly? I guess you are oblivious to what the change is. Where the millions going to help illegal immigrants could contain over-crowding, help ratios, help the LEGAL children living in poverty, get legal parents better jobs, etc....

I see this in my own neighborhood. Most of my white neighbors are older couples - emptynesters. Every time one of them moves out - a non-white family moves in.

This.

It's been the opposite in my neighborhood.

opposite how? white families moving in and people of color moving out?

All the new homeowners I've met in my neighborhood are white families, yes. Generally when older people move, or an owner sells a rental unit.

There were 2 rental homes sold on my block recently and both were bought by young white families.

I'm happy to see any family with young kids moving in, though.

It isn't racism. It is about how lower SES students tend to be the ones that have behavioral issues or low motivation to succeed. I would rather have my child be the only white kid in a classroom of motivated and respectful kids vs a classroom of white children who don't do their homework, act up in class and whose families don't value education.
We live in east county and in my daughter's class, which is truly diverse, most kids do not do their homework, do not contribute to classroom group projects and whine and ignore the teacher. They disrupt the class and have the maturity of 1st grader. (this is middle school). There are a few motivated kids in the class and they absolutely hate that the teachers spend all the time with the poor performers. Not to mention, my daughter's scores are very high because they are teaching things she learned in elementary school. Also, due to the low interest and SES, there is a lack of community and involvement at the school. I don't fault parents who are being stretched thin, but when we are talking about 95% of the population in the same boat, it makes for a pretty sad school experience. Anyone in higher performing schools will never understand this until they experience it for themselves.
A friend's child goes to another middle school that is somewhat diverse but higher SES. The school has a lot of fun events planned and this helps build a positive school community. Our school doesn't have much going on because no one makes the time or prioritizes school events. It's sad difference between the haves and have-nots. And I blame the county for building all the low income housing in east county.
And this is why many of us move to nearby Howard County or go private. We noticed a few families who are zoned for this school are missing and I don't blame them. We were considering private for next year and beyond, but decided to move to Howard county because we prefer public schools.

Yea all the poor people are dumb, unmotivated and stealing your tax dollars. BLAH!BLAHBLAH!

Well, here's my issue. I actually think my kids are getting a great education, but their elementary school is almost at 150% capacity. I think that's deplorable. Yes, it's RCES and I did comment on that earlier DuFief thread. The county has a "plan", which I put in quotes because it won't help my kids who will be out of there before it's implemented, and once it is implemented, it will no longer be helpful due to population growth. I'm sad to see my kids in overcrowded schools with no tangible short term plan to address it.
Bright side is that the teachers have been wonderful.

So I can see why some move or go private.

I think my child is getting a good education too. She's in a title 1 school (I'm not sure if it's overcrowded), but I love that there's only 17 kids in the classroom. My daughter is only in kindergarten, but she's picked up so much since school started. I love when she reads her stories to me or tells me random facts she learned in social studies. I think she'll be fine in MCPS.

You are going by 2 months in Title 1 kindergarten of 17 kids to know she will do well in MCPS - lol, please stop.

Yes, not wanting illegal immigrants sucking our taxes dry in our county is very racist.

Well one solution is to make Spanish the official language of instruction in MoCo schools (why not, if Spanish speakers are the majority). Since apparently you're incapable of empathy, I look forward to your kids' struggle with SSOL.

Poor reading comprehension. No absolutes given. Compare scores from high SES to low SES and you will see what the trend is. I don't dispute behavior issues amongst all classes, but I am willing to place a bet that your school doesn't have at least one fight a week. I am also wiling to bet that as a whole, high SES schools perform better than low ses. That has been proven.

it's not true. All any family wants is the best education for their child and the higher SES you go the better the educational experience. Thats just a fact

Isn't being exposed to a realistic cross section of the society you live in part of the educational experience? How long will you shield your child from lower SES people for? You may not call it racism, but that's what it amounts to.

As a white person, I have no issue with diversity. My child in her private has more diversity than my other in public. I rather both be around kids that want to succeed than those that do not care. I sure as heck wouldn't move out to bumblef$ck West Virginia to go to school with all white kids. They have extreme low SES levels. This is not about race. Stop making it about race. It is mainly about the increasing wealth gap of this county as more and more poor people can move into low income housing that is being offered and the middle-class families getting sucked dry in taxes to pay for it. People that moved out to Montgomery County wanted a SUBURBAN lifestyle, otherwise they would live in DC. As the urban development pushes past Bethesda into Rockville, Silver Spring, and Gaithersburg while farm lands such as Clarksburg, Damascus turn into single family and townhouse havens, there is very little suburban left. And there are no new roads (besides 200) or schools to show for the increase. The county builds for taxes, makes up their required low income housing and screws the kids by not measuring apartments/condos as "school child housing" when in fact many immigrants rent or purchase one and live 2-3 families in a 2 bedroom apartment.

This! This is so right on.

People moved to MoCo because they want to be in a suburban area with good schools and a good sense of community. If they wanted city life, they would be in DC. This is very much not about race. I am not white and don't care if my kids go to school with kids who are white/black/Asian/Latino/purple/orange. I do want them to be at a school with adequate resources where they will be challenged to learn to the best of their ability.

So instead of posting other countries that do this like the PP asked, you go on the defense and say the entire county should teach in Spanish instead? Brilliant.

I have zero empathy for illegal immigrants whether they are 40yr old Canadians, 20yr old Iranians, or 7yr old El Salvadorians. I do however have extreme empathy for the immigrants who struggle and wait to enter American legally and how long they have to wait because so many cut in line and eat up the resources the honest immigrants deserve.

I do have empathy for my kids who are only being taught their native language in school when all other countries teach their kids 1-2 more languages in elementary school. The ESOL kids of course are getting the advantage here again. They are the only kids being taught 2 languages for free. Legal citizens? Nope.

Since you're mentioning other countries, this is exactly what many do -- provide education for their minorities in their native language. The suggestion that the whole of MoCo go Spanish was clearly tounge in cheek, and if you can't tell I can't help you.

RCES is 50% white. That means 50% non-white. Not exactly a "very" white school. I don't know where there are "very" white schools in MCPS anymore. Maybe the W schools but I don't have first hand knowledge.
