So very true.
Why are those 70 something year olds still playing their dirty games in the office of teacher recruitment?

So many talented teachers apply to MCPS who never receive any call back for an interview, while classrooms get assigned people with 'emergency certifiations", peope with minimal or no experience in teaching.

Sounds like corruption. Can’t the state investigate?

MCPS, b/c of its pay and benefits, does indeed attract an educated crew. However, the number of applicants applying can be overwhelming, too. HR is a mess. It has always been a mess no matter who was in charge. One of my friend's former student teacher, who was hired, is going nuts trying to secure a job. She interviews and doesn't hear back. Many administrators are not trustworthy, and they have no sense of professionalism.

But MCPS can get away with its treatment of staff. why? The system is so big that it cranks through teachers b/c guess what? There are tons of applicants willing to fill spots. On the outside, MCPS looks shiny and golden. However, those of us who have been insiders know the truth. It's a big machine.

The smart new teachers get the hell out - as they should. Once you invest too many years in the system, you will never find a job to match your salary, benefits and retirement.

sad . . .

I remember the government shut down happened and MCPS wanted to lure hordes of people in with zero experience and act like because they work for the government they must be geniuses at teaching. Meanwhile they fire the teachers who go above and beyond with Masters degrees and a lifetime of investment to Education. Teaching is probably the hardest, stressful, and taxing profession. Unless you are a crap tenured teacher who can just push worksheets and hates their burnout day to day. They fire so much and destroy positive work environments that they getwhat they have now, extreme shortages. They even lowered sub standards as they will be filling classrooms. Subs don't grade so it should be an easy A and they will convince the kids that they are exceptional college material.

Inviting people to apply doesn’t mean you will hire them.

You post constantly about tenure, but it seems you washed out prior to that. Just give it a rest.

There are many excellent teachers in MCPS. It’s okay that you weren’t one. Focus on your new life.

Many teachers post here about the injustices in Education. The only way to solve these problems is to recognize there are problems. This is MCPS's problem. As a teacher my goal is to solve problem in education. The rape, violence, fraud, and systematic abuse has got to stop. If you just going along with it then you are just as much a culprit as the perpetrators.

Your old ass probably got in education in the Good ol Days when teachers had respect. Some teachers never know what that's like.
There is a teacher at my school that is so big and fat and a waste of space but she was miserable with her own life that she goes behind backs to make lives difficult. You remind me of her. Defending abusive corrupt systems with anti educational scapegoat rhetoric

Some people just fear that the corruption and abuse will come to a head. Sounds like abuse sympathizers might have their own dirty laundry.

Maybe you want Epstein's girls to just shut up too. Abuse is traumatizing.

I agree their are excellent teachers. I think those excellent teachers should not be harrassed, bullied, and made to do unethical things for admins who want quick fixes to problems they created.

Are we really sure that it’s that many teachers rather than a handful rehashing? You know the one or two people at your job who are already having a bad day at 8 am every single day and can be counted on to balk at any reform effort don’t represent the majority of your colleagues. A couple days ago, I sat in PD across from a woman who taught my eldest over a decade ago. This woman has not updated anything in that time span. Her methods, materials, and morale are still crap. (Praying my youngest gets someone else this year.) Meanwhile, everyone else was energized and sharing things that worked great last year. She shared one project that was already old when my eldest did it in 2007. It was incomprehensible then and is incomprehensible now. The only “update” was that she typed it into Google Docs rather than Word. Then, she spent the rest of the time complaining about the students.

These are the teachers that MCEA defends and says that you could learn something from the veterans(who barely can figure out computers). The newbies will go crazy seeing apathy and burn out have security. They will strive to perfect their craft and point out weaknesses in the system. Then they will be fired as the old teachers are the only ones with protection. You union dues are used to protect tenured teachers and weed newbies out. No wonder no one wants to teach anymore. I don't whistleblow except for dcum because they WILL come after you for "stirring the pot".

You have got to get over the tenure thing, PP. It’s not a good look.

In a time of much violence in education all people need respect and tolerance not just 50 something's and above.

It's funny that you specify that age group. In my school, the women who pick on me are all 50 something-year-olds, who have enough years for full retirement but choose to continue working as they are in the principal's inner circle, get lots of perks, always get approved for long term leaves and have flexible schedules.
Coming from another country where the emphasis was not merely on knowing and teaching the subject, adults had to show respect, humility, empathy towards each other as well as the students. There was camaraderie among everyone.
Unfortunately, my experience here has been quite different; picking on someone different from them has become a cruel game for certain educators.
My biggest challenge is not the kids or the workload. It is trying to avoid having anything to do with certain co-workers who will do anything to create a toxic environment and get me in trouble.
We keep on hearing about implicit and explicit bias year after year.
The truth is that they absolutely do not accept someone from my country of origin to be doing the same level of work as they do.
Had I been working in the front office, a TA, or preferably a building service worker, they would have left me alone and even embraced me I would have brought diversity to the school.
However, being employed at their own level renders me highly undesirable. So they bug me, and harass me, hoping I will leave or get in trouble with the school administration.

Thank God I teach in a school where the adults are so overwhelmingly competent and supportive that the few who aren’t are instantly identifiable in an incident without anyone mentioning their names.

If you hate your specific school or district, find a new one. But some of you (or possible one sick individual) seem to hate the actual profession. You need to leave teaching altogether and then stop posting about it for your own sake.

I thought I’d love the restaurant business. Within six months, it ruined my health and my relationship. I left it and have never talked about it until now. I certainly don’t accuse anyone happy in the restaurant business of being old, fat, a bully, dupe, or incompetent. I realize there is a dream job for everyone. Go find yours!
