Does anyone ever get fired in MCPS?

MCPS has had huge public failures lately yet no one ever is held responsible.

The teacher/child molester that administrators had known about for years harmed many children yet not one MCPS staff has been held accountable in any way.

MCPS seems to be ignoring the Algebra 2.0 failures. No one is taking accountability or even admitting this is problem. They are all patting themselves on the backs for just giving kids all an extra 15% points.

The planning group always brags about they get the numbers right all the time yet there is massive imbalance, overcrowding and crumbling facilities all over MCPS. In the same breath that they brag about knowing the numbers they also disavow themselves of any responsibility for overcrowding because who knew all these people were going to move into the area????

What does it take to get fired in MCPS or are these just life long positions with no performance expectations?

I'm pretty sure Joynes still had a job up until he got arrested. So I do think people get fired. Being unable to report to work because you're in jail for taking liberties with your students apparently does the trick. So I guess the deal is that you can pretty much do whatever, but if you get arrested and are thus unable to report to work, well then they have no choice but to let you go.

Fire the nasty secretaries. Too many people looking for jobs to keep on those that are mean to the community. Step aside and make room for people who are happy to be working in a school.

A colleague of mine was fired for being alone off campus with a female student who was 17. They were in a public place but he had driven her there without her parent's permission. Another colleague was fired after having a series of text messages with a male student about being gay but not of a sexual nature.
Both these teachers were good educators who showed poor judgement. I am never alone with students an don't text ir use social media with them. There is simply no other way for innocent teachers to be above suspicion. Esp sad because the people actually abusing kids are retained.

I don't think either of those things are appropriate.

And then there is Rock Terrace School, where the principal was allowed to retire and had a retirement party thrown for her. All the while MCPS has paid out over $30k to families of students who were ripped off, and over $50,000 in legal fees already dealing with the chaos.

That's why I said they showed poor judgement. The first teacher gave a student a ride in the rain to the metro station. He should have had her call her parents first. The other teacher was trying to counsel a young man who was struggling with being gay and Muslim. He should have referred the boy to guidance although we all knew the counselor was a homophobe. Both were very missed by students and colleagues.

It's funny, because I'm totally not a fan of MCPS, but one thing I've found myself having to do is schedule stuff with the BOE for public meetings, and everyone I speak to on that end - despite all of the negative things I have to say about the BOE - is always very nice and professional. And they know I'm not a friend of the BOE, but they're nevertheless courteous. So not everyone is awful.

Sorry, I meant at the actual schools.

Central office staff is usually nicer than the school front office staff. But they rarely have to deal with ridiculous parent behavior so I'm not surprised.

I haven't noticed any patting on the back for this. What are you basing this statement on?

They technically do - they run out the good teachers with poor administration and not treating them well and keep the crappy ones.

I don't claim to have specifics for this case, but retirement parties are thrown by the individual school's social committee, which gets its funds from staff members of the school. There's one MCPS reception for all retirees each year, but it's relatively minor. If this principal had a party, it wasn't paid for by MCPS.

My DS - and us - had a terrible experience with a teacher this past year - found out many, many others had similarly bad experiences - for many years prior and this year. Met with principal - she said "I understand your concerns, we have been working with that teacher for 8 years to improve upon things." 8 years! So to answer your question, it seems that no, at least teachers are not fired! And +1 that office staff are pretty much never fired, no matter their attitude!
