In a time of much violence in education all people need respect and tolerance not just 50 something's and above. ;)
It's funny that you specify that age group. In my school, the women who pick on me are all 50 something-year-olds, who have enough years for full retirement but choose to continue working as they are in the principal's inner circle, get lots of perks, always get approved for long term leaves and have flexible schedules. Coming from another country where the emphasis was not merely on knowing and teaching the subject, adults had to show respect, humility, empathy towards each other as well as the students. There was camaraderie among everyone. Unfortunately, my experience here has been quite different; picking on someone different from them has become a cruel game for certain educators. My biggest challenge is not the kids or the workload. It is trying to avoid having anything to do with certain co-workers who will do anything to create a toxic environment and get me in trouble. We keep on hearing about implicit and explicit bias year after year. The truth is that they absolutely do not accept someone from my country of origin to be doing the same level of work as they do. Had I been working in the front office, a TA, or preferably a building service worker, they would have left me alone and even embraced me I would have brought diversity to the school. However, being employed at their own level renders me highly undesirable. So they bug me, and harass me, hoping I will leave or get in trouble with the school administration.
