They just have thugs pulling up on jet skis and shooting people on the beach.

This word tells me all I need to know about you.

What should you call someone who commits violence?

We just cancelled our week in Punta Mita scheduled for the end of March.

Where are you going instead?

Not sure yet. We'll get a full refund on our hotel (the drop dead date is March 1) and will have to do a flight credit with the airline. I consider us very lucky.

Pickings are slim since we're a month out, though. We prefer direct flights, which limits us to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Direct flights are $8K for a family (very high) and even once there, all of the luxury accommodations are booked.

If anyone has recommendations, I would be all ears! I suspect we'll probably end up doing something in California or Florida. I'm disappointed, as we really needed this vacation (tough 6 months at work) and I love Mexico, but no way am I willing to risk my children's lives or well-being.

Sadly, it'll be years before I can convince DH to go back to Mexico. C'est la vie.

Can you get to Grand Cayman? It's safer than T&C. We liked T&C but now there is more tourist-target crime. Half Moon Bay in Jamaica is lovely but outside of resort you want a driver.

Same in Cancun. They aren't purposely aiming for tourists, but sometimes they get caught in the crossfire.

That was an incident in 2024. You’re safer in Cancun than DC

Unfortunately a child likely has more risk being shot either intentionally or unintentionally in the US than on the beach in Mexico.

This website has way too many people who fumble a simple risk analysis.

Mexico is cheap. Period. People vacation there because it is cheaper than alternatives in safer, better governed, 1st world environments. If you really think it's a safe environment, you're hopelessly deluded. Not every single tourist has to be murdered for a place to be dangerous - crime occurs on a spectrum, and there's plenty of it in Mexico, a country where cartels control a third of the territory. Want to take risks in return for a cheap vacation? Your prerogative, but the risks are there.

The US is a badly governed third world country. Just look at murder rates here vs Europe.

You're blowing it out of proportion. The crime is mainly cartel related crime amongst themselves. I not only vacationed there but lived there for a couple years, happily went to work and sent my kids to the school and activities, never worried, never felt unsafe, never had any incidents, nor did anyone we know, plus millions of US citizens live there year round without incident. Now, I'm not sure I would go there NOW that the cartels are all riled up, but it was not as risky as you present, assumming you were not involved with the cartels.

If Canada would take me, I’d go.
