Fairmont Mayakoba won’t refund

I would still go

I would not go. Fwiw travel insurance does not always cover this anyway depending on specifics, when you got the insurance, what incident and where...

Any thoughts on how to deal with this? We are not inclined to bring our two kids to Mexico at this point.

It wasn’t a good idea when you booked either. Oh well, now you know.

I agree. My family refuses to travel anywhere in Mexico for any reason bc of cartels. Our friends think we are insane and frequently travel to all the tourist hotspots all over Mexico. They rave about the gorgeous resorts etc. Not worth it to me.

You were insane. Prior to yesterday, the cartels did not mess with you if you did not mess with them. It was perfectly safe for the average tourist. However, things have changed now. Tourists might become collateral targets.

I had a pretty good travel card (Chase sapphire) and I don’t think they would cover this. It doesn’t meet the criteria.

This is why you must buy trip insurance whenever you go outside the US. This is also in case your GOD forbid et injured and need to get a medical flight out.

I had the same thought, so I looked it up. It looks like Fairmont Mayokoba's best refund cancellation policy available still requires a week's notice? I think that's what I am seeing? And OP said they were supposed to go this week. So I wouldn't assume they paid the cheaper nonrefundable rate.

I wouldn't either. Not right now. Mayakoba all the way on the other side of the country from the problem area, but this kind of unrest could move/pop up elsewhere. It probably won't. But I wouldn't go anyway. And OP is having anxiety over it, so even if it were perfectly safe, she'd probably just be nervous the whole time.

I wouldn't expect a refund, though.

We're also supposed to go to the cancun area this weekend and are trying to change plans. I normally have no qualms about Mexico and have been many times (and I think many PPs are crazy for being so paranoid) but this feels different.

News flash: Mexico is dangerous! Cartels vie for power with a generally inept, corrupt, and ineffective government. Who knew?

Or leaving a country run by mobsters.

Next time, use an agent to book - they have more negotiating power because they send the resorts volume.

If you end up going or delay it, sign up for Medjet’s evac insurance made for civil unrest (it should be less than $500 for the trip).

Or credit for Fairmont, rather than just this hotel.

I've been put off by the carbon monoxide poisoning deaths for the past few years in addition to crime.

So it’s like DC and Chicago?
