Yes these silly women who don’t want to put themselves in danger. If only we could be more like men and start some wars and shoot each other over drugs like the cartels!

You know that poster would be like "Stupid Karen just wanted her margarita!" if she and her family got caught up in violence.

We just cancelled our week in Punta Mita scheduled for the end of March.

Where are you going instead?

Not sure yet. We'll get a full refund on our hotel (the drop dead date is March 1) and will have to do a flight credit with the airline. I consider us very lucky.

Pickings are slim since we're a month out, though. We prefer direct flights, which limits us to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Direct flights are $8K for a family (very high) and even once there, all of the luxury accommodations are booked.

If anyone has recommendations, I would be all ears! I suspect we'll probably end up doing something in California or Florida. I'm disappointed, as we really needed this vacation (tough 6 months at work) and I love Mexico, but no way am I willing to risk my children's lives or well-being.

Sadly, it'll be years before I can convince DH to go back to Mexico. C'est la vie.

Boca beach club has rooms week before easter. $2k a night. If that's too much, Eau palm beach is around $1500/night. Ritz Amelia is $1000/night. Ritz Ft Lauderdale is $950. Ritz Grande Lakes $1000. There are options.

Sorry you are too cheap to vacation somewhere without gang violence.

So it’s like DC and Chicago?

Not going there either. Or NYC

Suggest barricading yourself in your home and unplugging all electronics for added security. Can’t be too safe!

You're probably the person who would be the first to say they should have known better if something were to happen.

Lock the doors on your minivan! Quick!

Look at Redweek, search "Florida" and put in your dates. It's a timeshare rental site. If you are looking at the week leading up to Easter, you can get a 3BR at the Marriott Vacation Club in Marco Island with a full kitchen and 3BA for $1420/night. You can get a 2BR, 2BA villa at Marriott Ocean Point in Palm Beach Shores for $664/night! They aren't as nice as a Ritz but they sure beat not going anywhere. Plus there's lots of space, full kitchens and washer/dryers.

NYC?! I live here and it's so safe. I literally walk around at night with headphones in.

Why don't you just stay somewhere slightly less luxurious?

You're fine going there. First of all, Puerto Vallarta is on the completely other side of the country. Secondly, the Yucatan isn't known for a lot of cartel activity.

Any thoughts on how to deal with this? We are not inclined to bring our two kids to Mexico at this point.

It wasn’t a good idea when you booked either. Oh well, now you know.

True.

They just have thugs pulling up on jet skis and shooting people on the beach.

Well, you certainly can't go if all the luxury accommodations are booked. That's no way to live. No one should be expected to undergo the hardship of non-luxury accommodations.

My offer to buy someone’s res for 10 to 15 cents on the dollar still stands. Seriously. The resorts will be empty and I could use the break. Anyone? Let me know and we can PM to work it out. A little bit is better than nothing for those not going, right?!

What is your objection to the word? I used it as intended here:
