Mexico is cheap. Period. People vacation there because it is cheaper than alternatives in safer, better governed, 1st world environments. If you really think it's a safe environment, you're hopelessly deluded. Not every single tourist has to be murdered for a place to be dangerous - crime occurs on a spectrum, and there's plenty of it in Mexico, a country where cartels control a third of the territory. Want to take risks in return for a cheap vacation? Your prerogative, but the risks are there. https://www.cfr.org/global-conflict-tracker/conflict/criminal-violence-mexico https://elcri.men/en/violence-map/ https://www.statista.com/topics/6576/crime-and-violence-in-mexico/?srsltid=AfmBOoqsgHtBSJ1fzwl9a3cB1mdh5e3ff2aVYiaAS5GftwBPIvW1FVWE
You're blowing it out of proportion. The crime is mainly cartel related crime amongst themselves. I not only vacationed there but lived there for a couple years, happily went to work and sent my kids to the school and activities, never worried, never felt unsafe, never had any incidents, nor did anyone we know, plus millions of US citizens live there year round without incident. Now, I'm not sure I would go there NOW that the cartels are all riled up, but it was not as risky as you present, assumming you were not involved with the cartels.
