Most 16 year olds have sex. Its a completely normal age to start.. There’s also a lot of kids who start at 14, or even 12, so, 16 is older than average.

In my country, such a thing would never be tolerated among decent families.

They don’t have one, because it’s not true.

This report is around 20 years old, but the trend has been fewer teens engaging in these behaviors:

“ • By age 15, only 13% of teens have ever had sex.”

“ • The proportion of teens who had ever
had sex declined from 49% to 46% among females and from 55% to 46% among males between 1995 and 2002.”

I’m a great parent and my dd chose to have sex at 16. wouldn’t have been my choice, but all kids are different. she did it once and never again, and semi regrets it. there was no relationship, just a summer fling. she’s a terrific kid, student and person.

Why is everyone speculating, or citing surveys from 2002, when:

- our children’s school system surveys and publishes the latest statistics on this very issue?

Here is the scientifically collected and tabulated results from the school system itself:

Oh, you'd just rather not know? Got it.

I’d like to know if my DD wants to share it with me. I’ve told her that if she chooses to become sexually active while under my roof, she can share it with me and I will help her obtain birth control without judgement. I told her that I will neither condone it nor shame her, just do everything I can to keep her physically and emotionally safe. This feels appropriate to me with a 17 year old about to leave for college.

It was like this in my Ohio suburban school. Not impoverished, not rich. Most kids start bullying other kids for not doing it by 15 or sophomore year. Most kids start at 14 in freshman year, and I remember still being a virgin junior year, and one 14 year old freshmen on my bus, thought it was cool to tell others that they already did it with 7 people at 14!! It was like November?! I was shocked.

He says she’s on birth control and that they’re using protection. He’s well informed about the risks, consent, and related issues, but I’m wondering if there’s anything else I should be doing.

Should I inform her parents? He says they already know and that I shouldn’t say anything, but I’m not completely sure that’s true.

No.

But make as sure as you can without actually standing over them that they are using condoms (very easy for a teen boy to ignore the need to do so with a girlfriend that is on the pill -- maybe she is, maybe she isn't, maybe she is and doesn't remember to take it every day, and they need to be protecting themselves from STDs anyway, no matter what they think the risk with any particular partner is).

+1

Better to know he is active and enjoys it

These days it’s a way bigger risk not being active

What’s the risk?
