You're missing the forest for the trees here. If you are non-black you don't ever need to interact with a stranger black child unless they are hitting your child or damaging your property. Then you can do what is necessary. But if they are just using bad language or damaging public property, do not approach and do not engage, and do not worry about what their parents let them do. Whatever values black people teach their children is their business.

When the kids taunt or bother the other kids, it is no longer a private matter. It seems the values are a little weak if that lesson wasn't taught.

Sticks and stones can break your bones. I just cannot believe that in 2023 anyone in their right mind would say something to a total stranger about watching their language in public, let alone a child that ain't yours, let alone a black one. For all you know his older brother could have been around the corner with a gun. Put your safety and well-being above your need to demonstrate moral superiority and wait until you are alone with your child to have a talk about certain things.

WTF?! People like you, allowing your imagination to inform your perceptions of your reality get people like me killed.

Thank you DCUM, for letting me know how some people really think. Things like this not only help me to put MY safety and well-being above my need to demonstrate moral superiority, it helps me to better understand what seemingly normal people are really thinking — while they chatter over the latest Dilbert cartoons.

This kind of cussing is very common among kids of certain races. If you complain to the parents they will cuss you out too. Just avoid the park.

Yes, but now the Ta-nehisi-reading pearl-clutchers think you are a racist for noticing. On this thread, noticing reality = racist.

Black kids aren't untouchable. And why are you assuming the older black brother has a gun?

This thread is full of rich people who have never lived outside a gated community and have no street smarts whatsoever. See you in the news I guess.

What's the lesson you're trying to teach exactly?

That street smarts cannot be learned by reading a forum for rich ladies, they have to be learned through experience living among folks of all different kinds.

And this is something you think you are uniquely experienced in? You sound extremely sheltered like you gained all your smarts from watching tv.

Ma'am, you have no idea about anything. Good luck to you, because you are really going to need it if you ever venture beyond your tony suburb.

Bingo. This is key. I suspect OP and her kid are white, and the 8th grader is black.

White ladies should under no circumstances be discussing the N word and it’s appropriateness or lack thereof with black kids they don’t know.

It’s not ok for any kid, even a black one to taunt that word at other kids.

That’s fine. Think whatever you want. But don’t be the white lady lecturing a black kid about the N word. It’s an awful look. Best case scenario you’re going to end up looking and feeling very stupid.

So you’re totally cool with black kids taunting other kids with that word?

Yes, that’s what I said, I’m “totally cool” with that.

No. But I’m an adult and also not a moron. I recognize that this is a scenario where literally no one needs to hear from me. OP’s kid caught the vapors, ran home crying, whatever. That’s fine. Problem solved, move on. You don’t march up to a basketball court in your Lululemon and start reprimanding a black teenager for saying the N word. You look like a GD fool.

If you are serious you are a fool.

Your assumptions are so cute. Clutch that purse tighter when passing scary people.

I don’t think anyone should be taunting anyone else with any words. But people can say what they want. No one is going to be watching what they say because a kid is present. You don’t have a right not to be offended when you are in public. If OP doesn’t like what her kid might hear at the courts, he shouldn’t be there. And yeah, it is stupid for some white lady to be lecturing a black kid about the N word unless she’s his mom or his teacher or responsible for him in some way.

would it be fine for a black woman to lecture a white child who used that word. I know you'll say yes. don't be a hypocrite.

You are not black, then right? Please google Ta-Nahesi Coates or something to get some more nuance around how and why many black Americans choose to use that word and white people just need to deal with it. You can’t have everything. Sorry. When you’ve fully divested from white supremacy, dismantled structural racism in this country, addressed reparations, then let’s negotiate. If y’all do that, I bet all black folks would give up the word 100%.

Nope. You want equity. Stop with the double standards.

Aww look, somebody is up late scrolling through DCUM and got very upset about their tiny little pink wiener. Steaming mad at how we all have to appease the blacks these days!! Go ahead, let it all out. I’ll bet you would’ve gotten into Harvard but for AA. Probably go home from work every night just seething at how you have to placate these uppity black women.

Be more pathetic, you can’t.

No. I do not care if the kid said the N word. I am saying even saying FO to the OP comes from kids of certain race. I can bet you that it was not an Asian-American kid. And if it was, if you complained to the parent, that kid would get their a$$ whooped at home. But, other unnamed races do not parent like Asian Americans.

And frankly, I am far more afraid of a white male showing up on school premises with a gun (and I am white).
