It ended up hardly hitting Tampa. DeSantis repeatedly said that there was a lot more uncertainty for this one than is typical for hurricanes and that we all had to watch closely for any changes.

They were inside the cone. Not in the center, but in the cone. Anyone living on the Florida Gulf Coast has to know that the interaction with Cuba was going to affect the path and the strength of a hurricane, so the track before Cuba is a midrange estimate of the probabilities. It went over Cuba without significantly weakening and then wobbled repeatedly while the eye reorganized and the hurricane got bigger and stronger. The wobbling was obvious on the radar images and all the hurricane and weather people were pointing it out. People in flood-prone places should have been preparing to evacuate and watching the strength and track. This was a big storm. Even if it went to Tampa it would have inundated Sanibel and Cape Coral. They were on the side where the strongest winds were pushing water into the bays, rivers, and canals.

People look to the government and the media for signals about HOW serious a situation is. The Lee County officials and even Ron DeSantis seem to be saying they didn't know how serious it was, and that's why none of this is their fault (of course). How are regular people supposed to have known? My spouse works in insurance and so he was studying these hurricane maps in detail, and he started noticing the shift on Sunday. Why didn't Lee County officials and Ron DeSantis have that same level of attention and detail? It is literally their job to sound the alarm and make sure people understand how bad something could get. They don't need 100% certainty to sound the alarm - you don't get 100% certainty with a hurricane.

This was an egregious government failure.

I will never understand why the barrier islands weren't evacuated. This is a horrible, horrible tragedy.

Sure these are trump’s supporters. You know the election was stolen, covid is fake, the covid vaccine has trackers in it, Fox News viewers, etc etc. The common theme- don’t trust the government, don’t trust science, global climate change is fake, liberals(anyone who disagrees with you) are wrong. Now you think these same people are going to listen to an evacuation order? That would go against their cult’s teachings.

Look, I am as angry about Republicans as everyone else. But yes evacuation orders make a difference.

The governor of the state is a covid denier. Why would republican comply with an evacuation order? The government can’t tell them what to do. Can’t force them out of their homes.

Looks like we’ve found the village idiot ^^^. DeSantis is not a “Covid-denier.” And he TOLD Florida residents to evacuate. Those who chose to stay have no one to blame but themselves. As for you, maybe educate yourself before blabbing garbage.

From your own link:

“Warnings for hurricane season start in June. So there’s a degree of personal responsibility here. I think the county acted appropriately. The thing is, a certain percentage of people will not heed the warnings regardless,” Anderson said on the CBS show “Face the Nation.”

Oh, no kidding! The mayor who failed in his responsibilities, is trying to blame anyone but himself! What a SHOCK.

Too funny watching Democrats desperately trying to score political points over a hurricane that changed course. Get over yourselves. DeSantis is doing his very best.

The residents are capable, intelligent people. Many are retirees and not uneducated. They chose to ignore what was coming and are talking about rebuilding on a barrier island. I lived in Florida for years on the west coast. My family would never have chosen to remain with a hurricane approaching, and those who are still living in the Tampa area evacuated this time as well.

+1 There's a huge degree of personal responsibility here.

If there were a fire raging in California and approaching your home, would you wait for your mayor to tell you to leave?

Or lack thereof. Plus the dopes trying to pin a hurricane's change in path on DeSantis, who by all accounts did everything he possibly could, well in advance.

Exactly. The PP doesn't sound very bright.
