Deal: I'll enact Arizona's immigration law in Georgia
4/28/2010 Republican candidate Nathan Deal said today that he would as governor support legislation that mirrors Arizona's new immigration policies. "I agree with the Arizona governor and Legislature that the federal government has failed miserably at protecting our borders and enacting sensible solutions that would protect our states, counties and cities from bearing the enormous costs associated with illegal immigration, from emergency room visits to public schools to the criminal justice system," said Nathan Deal. "As governor of Georgia, I'd work to pass and sign similar legislation." Deal, a former congressman from Georgia's 9th Congressional District, led the fight against illegal immigration in the U.S. House and authored the health care amendment that prevents illegal immigrants from signing up for coverage through Obamacare. He also authored legislation that would end birthright citizenship to babies born in the United States to parents in the United States illegally, and he put into law in 2005 language that for the first time required proof of identity and citizenship to gain Medicaid benefits. His legislative leadership earned him the highest ratings from FAIR and NumbersUSA, groups that support legislation for cracking down on illegal immigration. Until Congress gets off its duff and does something, many states will pass the same law. |
PP.actually he/she doesn't sound ridiculous...this person is really bitter with foreigners. |
I HATE when people cry racism in the immigration debate. It is NOT racism. I could care less what country people come from, as long as they are here LEGALLY. I was just listening to Zoya Phan on Diane Rehm discussing the horrors that occur in Burma. Girls as young as 5yo being raped, boys as young as 11 being forced to become soldiers. I think this is horrible (and, yes, I plan to make a donation, before anyone rants and raves at me about that). So, what is the answer? Do we allow everybody from Burma to come here and live illegally just to make their lives better? What about all those people in Sudan? What about all the other people living in far from ideal situations around the world? The answer is not to let everybody into one country, it's to try and make things better there. There are so many problems with allowing people to come into a country and live in the shadows. It needs to stop. Then change the laws to let in more LEGAL immigrants. |
| Seventy percent of political asylum requests are denied. This tells you that these rules are strict and certain conditions apply and finding a better job is not one of them. |
Exactly! So, why are we letting people in who are just looking to make a buck? I understand completely that life is hard in other countries, but letting everyone come to the US is NOT the right answer. And, especially letting people come in illegally? |
| With the economy in dire straits in the US today, states and municipalities making huge funding and spending cuts for schools, transportation projects, health care services, etc., with so many people losing their jobs, etc., IMO our country just doesn't have the resources to support everyone, especially the ones who aren't here legally. The infrastructure is what it is, we just don't have enough to go around right now, so I just don't understand why my tax dollars, which are already being spread super thin, should cover people who are not in the country legally. I am sympathetic to the people's plight trying to make a better life for themselves and families, who come here illegally and take a job, any job, to make ends meet. But that doesn't justify their being here in my eyes, whether they collect social services, retain health care services or send their kids to public schools, they are still draining on the resources of the country in other ways. I wish I could be mama bear and take care of everyone, but it just isn't possible. |
I agree with this. I am against illegal immigration. I know it's not PC to say that, but I am. That doesn't make me a horrible person. I can understand their situation, but that doesn't mean I am the one who can fix it. Of course illegal immigrants use resources. They use roads, they are (somehow) able to get cars, they use buses, their kids (yes, I know the kids are legal if born here) go to schools, they use hospitals and yes, they do buy houses. There are not enough nurses currently in most hospitals. There's a demonstration about that in DC today, actually. Adding more patients to the mix (who can't pay) is not helping the situation. There are way too many kids in a classroom, according to ALL of my friends who are teachers. There is no room to keep adding more. We cannot maintain the situation the way it currently is. |
Far too many Americans do not, or cannot, speak grammatically correct English but they do speak, read and write the language. As a matter of idle curiosity, who, and where, are these illegals who speak fluent English? |
You have no conception of American politics. Read the thread below of the Republican Gubernatorial candidate in Georgia. One of the platforms in his campaigh is, "We Speak English." By 2012 every border state will have enacted variations of the Arizona law. 2012 is a Presidential election year and politicians will garner more votes from the anti-illegal imigration voting bloc than they will from the Hispanic bloc. Illegal immigration, children born to illegal born to illegals automatically becoming citizens, being able to speak, read, and write English are HUGE issues. We have a secret ballot in this country and if put to a nationwide referendum they will pass by a 70 to one margin. |

Correction to 15:02 post. One of the Gubernatorial candidate in Alabama campaign platform is "We Speak English."
Georgia gubernatorial candidate has promised to enact Arizona law. |
People brought here illegally as babies and toddlers. |
Yes, I forgot about them. I wonder why they don't teach their parents English because that would make it so much easier to "pass" as legal |
| I am an immigrant (legal) and while I do not agree with the way Arizona is dealing with the illegal immigration problem, I completely agree that illegal immigration is a huge problem and should be dealt with. Rules and laws exist for a reason. In a civilized society we don't just get to follow some laws because we like them and not follow others because we don't like them. Legal residents (or citizens) should lobby their representatives if they want to change immigration laws, but illegal immigration is not acceptable in my book. This is coming from a person who endured 5 years of war and extreme poverty, but followed the rules to get here legally. If is far all the time? NO! Is it necessary to limit immigration and, to the extent that it's possible, eradicate illegal immigration? Absolutely!!! |
| I meant to say "Is it fair all the time?" |
