If you support Arizona - Don't be too quick to judge an illegal 'alien'

Oh well...

I hope you know why though, the terrorists "look white" and come with money $$$$$$$$, thats what America wants, not black, hungry looking people who simply come here to visit or work and help their kids and elderly.
Believe me, if your mom was white she would be here for as long as she wants.Wake up and smell the coffee!!!!

OP here, my dad is white and was still kicked out. My point is that A.) You can't just assume a person labeled 'illegal alien' is a bad person intentionally breaking the law and B.) the government is pretty incompetent at almost everything it does so don't hold out hope that there is one quick fix like the politicians in Arizona seem to be doing.

Shouldn't this thread be in the politics forum??

You said your father considered applying for citizenship. Why didn't he apply?

Op, I feel for your dad, but in all fairness he DID break the law and it must have been a felony b.c I dont think permanent residents can get deported for misdemeanor charges. Its a shame that the immigration officials acted after 40 years, but you cannot pretend that you dad is totally innocent in his current situation.

Oh and another thing, at least your dad got a free pass for 40 years and you got a chance to be born and raised here. Go to Miami International on a given day and take a look at the people (mostly very young men) who are being loaded unto planes (for committing minor drug offenses) bound for countries where they have no family and no connection.

I am not for or against Arizona, but I am confused. Isn't an illegal immigrant, but definition, breaking the law? I mean that's the illegal part right? So what did Arizona do that made it more illegal? Isn't it just that the police now have the right to stop someone -without any other cause - besides they "look" like an illegal alien?

If that is true, I'm not sure how the OP's father fits. I would think the outrage isn't the fact they can catch illegal immigrants, but more the harrassment of legal citizens that - based on appearance - the police assume are illegal immigrants. It would suck to think that everytime you leave the house you better have a valid ID or you could be put in jail. Or that you can't drive to the supermarket without being pulled over due to how you looked.

I have to laugh at this... for me to prove I'm here legally I have to show at least 15 pages of paperwork. Who's going to walk around with a folder like this at all times?
Seriously, just because "I look illegal?"
I feel like throwing up, excuse me.

My DH is an immigrant, has been here legally every step of the way and now has a green card. IMO by the very definition of illegal alien is breaking the law, it is pretty cut and dry. For whatever reasons that person may have, they broke the law to enter the country and stay here. I do not understand why an illegal alien should get some sort of free pass, special treatment, as if we shouldn't catch them and deport them? What's the point of having borders, immigration laws, etc if illegal aliens should just be allowed to come and go as they please? Do the rules that apply to me don't apply to them. If the major concern is racially profiling, in Arizona, let's be honest, it's not like there isn't one group overwhelmingly crossing into Arizonas borders illegally. So we should just let them all go so not to hurt anyone's political sensitivity. It is a serious problem, how else should it be solved? .

this makes sense to me...if you don;t want to risk being deported, i think people should do everything they can to become legal asap. otherwise i feel like deportation is always an option.

I find it very comical that folks turn to the argument "if you break the law then..." {complete with something about you get what you deserve, it's your fault, etc etc.}. The whole point of being a thoughtful, competent, brain-active citizen is to consider carefully whether the LAW itself makes sense. Personally, I find that the law and/or its application is often terribly lacking. Breaking up families, failing to consider whether a person's track record of 'good behavior' exonerates one from past mistakes, etc... often leads to terrible tragedies. Tragedies that I as an American citizen am very ashamed of.

I have family in Canada, and they often scratch their heads at the very inhumane application of our laws. I'll tell you this, not one of them wants to move here, that's for sure!

Hah, the best advice I have for non-US citizens seeking a decent life is move to Canada. For reals.

That's fine! Then, advocate to CHANGE the law. Go through the process to change the law.

By breaking the law, you're committing a crime. If you feel that the US should let everybody in, that's fine. Make that the law.

The laws are in place for a reason. If you don't agree with them, do something to change them. For reals.

How is it not the illegal immigrants fault for being illiegal?? They know they're here illegal and choose to stay...how is it not their fault?
And there is always the chance of getting caught...

Is this another anti- European statement?

People shouldn't have to earn their way?

You can't walk into other countries, you know.

In this country we do not have the option of disobeying laws with which we do not agree. What is so bloody difficult to understand that coming to this country illegally people have BROKEN US LAW. If you are willing to break the law to come here then how many other laws are you willing to break?
