MLMs deliberately target women and play on the whole "empower women" schtick. It promotes this idea of a side hustle but it's a load of crap. These women aren't entrepreneurs or running companies. They're the free help. Over 99% of distributors lose money or, if you're lucky, break even.
I don't mind Tupperware parties or Avon or some Norway stuff. It's fine. But I'm not going to support someone's self-destruction and mis-label it girl power. |
hey now. my parents are still using those knives 25 years later. they're good knives! |
No, they don't "own" anything. They are basically sales reps that sell products for a big corporation, whether that's Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, candles, essential oils, health drinks, whatever. They have a contract with these companies, which the company can terminate at any time. Hmmm, never saw a business owner who could be fired from the business they "own." These companies have rules, that you have to abide by. If you owned it, you could make up your own rules and run your "business" however you wanted. If you owned a business and decided you wanted to retire or change courses, you could sell the business. These women don't own a darn thing except the product they've bought from the company to sell. If you owned a business, you could call it Courtney's Cosmetics or Fanny's Fitness Shakes. But instead, you and every other sales person in the area are Mary Kay or Juice Plus or Beach Body. Which they do not own. |
Yep, this. The false hope is so cruel. |
Exactly. And if a man's male friend was some poor sap being hoodwinked into an exploitative business pipe dream -- especially if it meant annoying the pants off their friends and treating them as objects -- then yeah, they'd be more harsh. But Jason's Handyman Service, which Jason actually owns (could sell off, sets his own hours and goals for, not under review by "upline" people but actually under his control), then no. They aren't going to criticize something that doesn't exist, and that exploitative structure just isn't there for an ACTUAL owned business. |
A woman who used to babysit my kids occasionally YEARS ago has sent me two FB messages about hers. |

+1 The women I know who are involved in MLMs are vulnerable people, to begin with. |

So sad reading the posts on this thread. |
One "boss babe" in my neighborhood sends me these things ALL THE TIME. From different companies. I don't even really know her. She just adds me to her online parties. I quietly decline or leave the parties. I've never bought a thing. I thought she'd get the hint. Nope. I recently "unfriended" her and this is a big reason why. |
Check out Lula Rich on Netflix. Just one company but there are plenty of problems with most of them. |
What is MLM? Seriously wondering? |
Multi-level Marketing (scheme) |
Also the podcast "The Dream." I cannot believe these businesses are not criminal. |
