Do you think an Exit Ban could actually happen?

It's sad. If the posts on this board are real, then most of the people here need real mental help. Simply delusional.

Seriously. These people are insane.

There are two kinds of people not worried about our current brand of politics:

1. White people: Majority of them have absolutely no idea what it means to live as a marginalized community with limited or no rights.

2. Immigrants - They are so invested in the idea of American dream that they are not willing to accept that things may go really bad in America.

One thing I will note for my White friends, living in an authoritarian regimes even when you are a majority in no joke, I have lived in one and I know what I am talking about. Americans of every color, race, religion, ethnicity should be deeply invested to keep U.S a democracy.

My biggest disappointment with the current administration is 2 way system of governing, one set of rules of blues states and another for red states, people are going to wonder why are we even together. It is highly worrisome that there is an administration that is openly willing to acknowledge that they don't represent ALL Americans, but only a select few of their choosing.

So your position is that minorities have little to no rights and that now white people will also have "no rights"?

Do you realize how nutty this sounds?

This and you know what makes me sad that we have to convince Americans that they should want and need to fight for our democracy. Where was everyone when they taught this in our history classes?

That's...not true at all. Lots of people are watching things develop and questioning when it's time to get out of dodge. My household certainly has a "get out" plan in place, we're just watching for specific triggers.

Genuinely curious what your get out triggers are

Many of them have already been tripped (military in our cities, the attempts to criminalize dissent, etc.). The big one I have my eyes on is the prosecution of political enemies, which he is certainly attempting, but the court system itself seems to be holding for the time being. Now if he were to bypass the court system altogether and start locking up/executing/disappearing political enemies, journalists, and activists who are citizens, that'd be a big one. I'm also keeping an eye out for any asset seizure, revoking citizenship, etc. I'm also watching the rich people. If/when they begin to jump ship, I probably will too.

The issue with this regime is that they're attempting all the classic moves of fascism, but they are stupid and incompetent, so they haven't been entirely successful. The question is no longer "Is this a fascist takeover?" but rather, "Will this fascist takeover succeed?" I'm not yet sure enough that it will to uproot my life, and I'm not yet in immediate danger. But I have a plan and a go-bag should that change.

What History Teaches
• Fascist takeovers often look sloppy or absurd until they’re suddenly entrenched. Many contemporaries underestimated the threat because they thought, “These guys are clowns, they’ll never succeed.”
• Large portions of the population weren’t necessarily ideologically fascist — but they tolerated authoritarianism out of fear, apathy, or because they liked the scapegoating.
• By the time everyone “knew for sure” it was authoritarian, it was too dangerous to resist openly.

Yep, definitely understand the risk of underestimating them. I've really been coming to terms recently with the reality that most (white) people are ultimately going to side with these guys if it gets to that point. It's a hard truth to accept.

My best friend and I had a conversation awhile back that was sort of about this. Basically we both agreed that we now understood how people reacted as they did during authoritarian takeovers.

Like you, I've accepted that wealthy people, and whites especially, aren't going to feel much of the effects of what's happening and are unlikely to do anything to counter it.

I’m not siding with these guys, but I don’t have the luxury of dying for the cause. Not sure what else you want me to say. Political means are only effective when people trust in them. People have to trust that their lives will be made much worse (or nonexistent) if they don’t follow the rules. But so many of our institutions are just folding like cheap suits and many Americans are cheering it on.

I have little kids. Little kids I honestly wish I didn’t have so I didn’t have to see them live through this. Violence is already happening and it is going to get much worse.

And you've deemed watching me and mine die as an acceptable sacrifice for you to maintain your comfort. I don't expect you to say anything. I see you all clearly for what you are now. I can only hope that the shame and guilt of your culpability in this will motivate you to raise your children and grandchildren to be better than you are.

In an authoritarian set up, nobody will have rights, even White people. That's the very definition of authoritarianism.

DP and you are out of line. Where is PP saying that they don't care if others DIE? But your average person whose not rich and has little kids--what are you asking them to DO?? Don't throw out your overwrought accusation that they don't care about MURDER unless you can specifically tell Joe-blow average American with kids what exactly it is they are supposed to do? Many average people are struggling with what to do right now. What real power does any average white person without money really have? Privilege not be grabbed by ICE right NOW maybe, but power to change anything? I'm honestly grappling every day with what to do that might actually make a difference. There is so much indifference or outright support for what this administration is doing. What good does it do to write Congress people, many of whom around here are Democrats. What good does it do when the Supreme Court is bought and paid for and the military brass sit silently by while the POTUS suggests our cities be used as training grounds.

I know plenty of white people who are worried. Don't be a racist a-hole in the midst of all this. People need to come together, not find more wedges to drive people apart.

It's not racism to point out the tepid response and expected capitulation from the very people who have historically oppressed and terrorized us. We're scared. We know that you're scared too, but when y'all are scared, we die. And I will not be shamed for saying that scares me and makes me absolutely furious.

I don't give one flying fck if you think I'm out of line. I'm calling what I see. If that bothers you, be the change. But don't you dare lecture me for pointing out what has historically happened and what I'm watching unfold right fcking now. PP straight up said they have kids and cant afford to actually fight, ie. They will not fight, ie. They will stand idly by when the atrocities come. And that makes PP a cowardly POS.

OP here.

How is talking about something insane? I am not panicked. No one here is panicking. I care deeply for this country and am curious about its direction and my family's safety in it.

My family have citizenship in another country but that doesn't make it easy to leave. We have good savings. But we also have kids in school, professional licenses that aren't recognized in other countries, aging parents, etc. So, I don't think it's at all insane to consider how things may force our cards anyway.

Much of what people were mocked for worrying about has become reality. A year ago I wasn't expecting masked militias in cities, throwing people in concentration camps and joking about alligators eating them. THAT is insane.
