Do you think an Exit Ban could actually happen?

The Iron Curtain started to crumble when Hungary opened travel to Austria. East Germans could finally get to the West, in a roundabout way.

We may see a Trump controlled State Department refuse to ship passports to addresses in states he's mad at.

Five states issue enhanced driver licenses. More may follow. These can be used at land and sea borders.

People unable to obtain passports might use these to leave the country. There might be a scenario in which, for example, the EU allows some Americans to enter after flying from Canada. If this happens there would be dominoes.

It's far fetched, but so is having Trump as POTUS again after what happened the first time.

Hopefully the blue states can leave this rotting corpse of a country. This would allow the maga states to reinstate slavery, Jim Crow, miscegenation, strip birth rights and formally legalizing corruption.

Despite how insane this all is, that feels far fetched to me, but I also have no proximity to the government/how things work, so who am I really to know. Curious as to what you may think.

Anything is possible at this point. I never thought any of these things could actually be happening yet here we are.

In Germany they started taking over wealthy people's homes and businesses. Would that start here? I could see many poor Maga maybe being up for something like this if situation gets dire enough.

But wouldn’t the motivation to keep people in— in particular working people— be to maintain not only a country’s economy, money flowing, produces being made, but a large tax base? No citizens, no taxes being paid.

That said, didn’t Cuba permit dissidents to leave at some point?

the USA is one of the only countries that taxes foreign income and income when you are abroad. Ask any ex pat- it is SO SO frustrating.

I dont think an exit ban will come but they might make it very difficult for people to move money outside of the USA, I think they might actually want people to work as ex pats or maybe I hope this. There are so many american of color and it will be so difficult to strip them citizenship, it might be a win win if we all were encouraged to become ex pats- so didn't live one the USA but still paid our upper middle class taxes. they'd get our money but no mosques/temples/ religious days off in school etc... no women in weird clothes who don't automatically defer to male colleagues... or bring funky food to the lunchroom/school intl night.

I mean you can always just renounce your US citizenship and avoid the double taxation.

Kind of funny how many Americans do live as ex pats, but then when someone is here for decades on a green card the anti-immigrant folks are mad saying they should have gotten US citizenship if they wanted to live here permanently.

You know that other countries have immigration laws. Right? Surely you know this.

I have heard of more people buying second homes abroad in the past year. Is this why?

Why would they not want Americans to leave?

What would be the signs of that? Would it be apparent to a relatively switched on person that it's time to go? Because plenty of people are saying it now, and I don't really see it as being that dire (even though I detest the adminitsration)

I think the borders would be closed - entry and exit - and then it would be too late. It could happen over night without warning just like all of the other things happening. Like demolishing the White House in a day.

Economy was pretty good under Biden. So what exactly is the current gov's end game? Goal in simple terms?
