When it becomes obvious that it's time to go, it will be too late, because that's when everyone will be trying to leave, and also when other countries will be trying to keep us out. |
| And we all sit here like frogs in a pot 😵💫 any inkling of ban—get out. |
| I’m still shocked at the generals sitting there being called swarthy and fat. Ba k in the day a few would have walked out. |
That's...not true at all. Lots of people are watching things develop and questioning when it's time to get out of dodge. My household certainly has a "get out" plan in place, we're just watching for specific triggers. |
Genuinely curious what your get out triggers are |
| At least have a few things in place; make sure passports for the entire family are current, have cash at hand and park some money in an account like HSBC expat. In such situations, your ability to access money is everything. |
Many of them have already been tripped (military in our cities, the attempts to criminalize dissent, etc.). The big one I have my eyes on is the prosecution of political enemies, which he is certainly attempting, but the court system itself seems to be holding for the time being. Now if he were to bypass the court system altogether and start locking up/executing/disappearing political enemies, journalists, and activists who are citizens, that'd be a big one. I'm also keeping an eye out for any asset seizure, revoking citizenship, etc. I'm also watching the rich people. If/when they begin to jump ship, I probably will too. The issue with this regime is that they're attempting all the classic moves of fascism, but they are stupid and incompetent, so they haven't been entirely successful. The question is no longer "Is this a fascist takeover?" but rather, "Will this fascist takeover succeed?" I'm not yet sure enough that it will to uproot my life, and I'm not yet in immediate danger. But I have a plan and a go-bag should that change. |
On some level the signs are already happening. I don't personally feel the need to flee right now, but I want my high schooler to go to college outside the US, my college age child to pursue work or grad school outside the US and I'm in the very preliminary stages of looking at where I could go with my assets. If Trump or Vance retain power in 2028 I think you will start to see a very brisk exit. Instead of an exit ban, which would be very difficult to enforce, I think you are more likely to see freezing of assets or the inability to move assets overseas - just like old Hugo Chavez, It's actually extraordinary how much Trump cribs from Chavez's playbook. |
| If we could just ban illegal entry… |

Who is “we”. |
What History Teaches • Fascist takeovers often look sloppy or absurd until they’re suddenly entrenched. Many contemporaries underestimated the threat because they thought, “These guys are clowns, they’ll never succeed.” • Large portions of the population weren’t necessarily ideologically fascist — but they tolerated authoritarianism out of fear, apathy, or because they liked the scapegoating. • By the time everyone “knew for sure” it was authoritarian, it was too dangerous to resist openly. |

The ignorance in this thread is astounding, truly astounding. It is especially so compared to historical political movements.
There is zero chance of an exit ban under this administration, and frankly, why would they institute one? These people would love if the people supposedly talking about this to leave. |
Well, if they gave me relocation support and get me a house in the EU equivalent to mine here, I would go. In the long run, it would save them money. No Medicaid or social security for us! |
This is a fabulously out of touch take. |
