| Some coworkers were discussing our descent into authoritarianism and one mentioned his belief than an Exit Ban may very well be a possibility. Despite how insane this all is, that feels far fetched to me, but I also have no proximity to the government/how things work, so who am I really to know. Curious as to what you may think. |
| I don’t think there is a country on earth like that except North Korea. It’s extremely unlikely. |
| I think first there has to be a mass exodus of citizens. Then the ban starts. So you have a couple months to get out. |
maybe even a year. |
But wouldn’t the motivation to keep people in— in particular working people— be to maintain not only a country’s economy, money flowing, produces being made, but a large tax base? No citizens, no taxes being paid. That said, didn’t Cuba permit dissidents to leave at some point? |
| Why would they want to keep the enemy within??? |
Ukraine stopped fighting aged men from leaving. Russia, soviet block countries, East Germany until 1989. China has some controls for religious minorities. This is recent recent history. if a country splits apart (and the us might) and too many people try to move to the "better" part, there could be an exit ban by the more authoritarian/less economically successful part. |
They need people and there is no immigration into authoritarian regimes. |
There may be some seeking political asylum in other countries at some point, especially if well known dissidents have property confiscated or jobs taken away or are threatened in such a way that they need to GTFO. |
Remember the Von Trapps fleeing at the end of the Sound of Music because the father did not want to serve Hitler. |
Things would have to be in extremely bad shape to get that point and I hope I never see that in my lifetime. Like mass starvation and mass human rights violation kind of bad. It’s highly unlikely. |
| Fences aren't just for keeping people out. |
What would be the signs of that? Would it be apparent to a relatively switched on person that it's time to go? Because plenty of people are saying it now, and I don't really see it as being that dire (even though I detest the adminitsration) |
| The fevered imaginations some of you (proudly?) display are unreal. |
We are the boiling frogs |
