+1. They need to go back. |

So Arlington’s very similar to FFX in their current responses… basically a lot of all around support (legal, home delivery services, educational, etc. etc.) for the undocumented, and simultaneously raising real estate and property taxes… by a lot, in addition to cutting services and jobs. If anyone has comparable numbers or estimates between the counties, I’d like to see them. How many undocumented individuals, (and also students), are there in reality in FFX, and how many in Arlington? 1000? 10,000? 100,000? Does anyone even know - since no local district asks about immigration? And was it 25K to 35K per student per year? How many organizations exist through federal and state and local funds solely to support this population? Both the local government and the local school district say they have significant budget shortfalls, and are cutting positions of teachers and services.
On a separate note, there was a lot of publicity about 3 (?) raids looking for a few specific people - and apparently one arrest came of this. This person reportedly was convicted of sexual battery in the past, and deported twice previously. There is a local nonprofit that posts bonds, and lobbies hard currently to cease any and all cooperation with immigration services - even in cases like this. If you voted in the local elections, do you really agree with this, and if so, why? And if not, how can we tell the local government (they don’t seem to be perceptive, or worried about losing votes)? |
You are saying legal immigrants whose 5 year olds don't speak English have to go back? That's messed up. I didn't think schools offer special instruction for kids who don't speak English at all. Do they? |
That person is saying that legal immigrants should receive the same services as citizens, no more, no less. If someone immigrates legally, that's a voluntary choice, and they should be responsible for their own integration into their host society. Learning English is their responsibility; it should not be a cost imposed on taxpaying citizens, any more than should be finding employment, procuring housing, obtaining a car, or any of the other aspect of daily life. If you come here, it should be because you have the means to support your self. That includes having the means to learn the language. If charities want to provide language instruction, fine, but taxpayers should not be burdened with the expense. |
| Public education helps our community as a whole. It is worth the investment to help legal immigrants get up to speed in English because it serves our society as a whole to help people succeed. I hate that we spend so much money on educating illegal immigrants but that’s required by law and congress has avoided proper immigration reform forever. |

FCPS could easily cut $$ without damaging education. Just check out the rise in administration employees vs teachers and assistants who actually teach and work with students.
Expensive programs are not the answer. And, currently, they are spending major dollars on a boundary study that most people do not want and that the county does not need. As for the Board of Supervisors? Enough money to raise their pay (I realize that is a drop in the bucket) and McKay's "Covid Memorial." Cut the gravy and concentrate on the meat of the programs. |
| I agree with a lot of what PP have said in this post. Cuts must be made to balance the budget. But a lot of voters must support the current plan because the majority elected the current council. Nothing will change unless votes change. |
Exactly. Throw the bums out. All they know is spend, spend spend, because "the rich" will keep paying for everything, no need for any fiscal restraint. |
The average 5 year old of legal immigrants would not require a lot of additional support, because 5 year olds learn quickly, especially if surrounded by native speakers. The problems come from thousands of older kids and teens coming with no English and not literate in their native language. Many of them are not all that interested in assimilating. They skip classes, they go to school to get a meal or whatever but many of them are arriving without being literate in their native language. We really are not responsible for this and should not be paying for it. Maybe we need to move to a model where kids need to have a certain level of language ability in order to be eligible for grades 10-12 or past age 16. They can get jobs and learn English on their own time, and if they really want, can study for GED. They will get the kind of jobs they would be getting after 4 years of “high school” anyway. It doesn’t really matter if they are legal or not. Too many came and use too many resources and we cannot absorb them all. Thank god the faucet has been turned off. |
People say our immigration system is “broken” but typically what they really mean is they want unlimited immigration, or at least immigration of the people they want to come. |
But the free education also goes to those here illegally. And there are many here illegally due to the previous administration's actions (or deliberate inaction) |
| Why doesn't anyone ever ask why there are NEVER any productivity improvements in the education industry? When will they actually find a way to save some money? |
And adversely impact the union's membership by limiting the number of dues-paying members? |
No it does not. Those are part of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) and existed long before the DEI craziness. |
| Well don’t worry, they’ll definitely make up the shortfall by switching up FCPS transportation something bus routes mumble mumble |
