Fairfax County considers property tax hike

Anonymous
so all of us assume illegal immigrants pay zero tax? Do we know how much they pay taxes? I know the small business owners and workers always have a way to reduce their taxes, but I also know some illegal immigrants pay taxes to avoid conflicts with IRS. They are more cautious than other groups. If they pay taxes, their kids should get free education.

There are many ways in which residents pay taxes; sales tax, Federal income tax, State taxes, City or County taxes, real estate tax, property tax, inheritance tax…etc.
People that have been here for decades likely pay many of these, though many may not, but it’s pretty clear that a recent arrival of very large numbers that may not, and perhaps will not pay into this system, or at least not anytime soon, can tax said system, especially on the local level - this is what communities are seeing. Slower, legal immigration is preferable for any system, I think it’s hard to argue with that.

The parents of the many kids showing up in the middle of the school year not speaking a word of english definitely have not paid into the system.

Even if you think that each one gets paid under the table (which not all do!), they still pay property taxes -- passed through to them by their landlords -- and sales taxes. So yes, they definitely do pay into the system.

To that limited extent, which is to a much lesser extent than people who pay income and other taxes.

The landlords would pay the property tax regardless of who is or isn't renting the property. So, no, they don't indirectly pay into the system.

Only it's not a limited extent, it's basically the entirety of Fairfax's taxing authority!

What's the share of Fairfax County's revenue that's paid for by your commonwealth income taxes (and federal income taxes too, for that matter), to say nothing of FCPS's budget? Hint: it's not a lot, and certainly not enough to enable you to look down your nose at others!

Do you think property tax increases are absorbed by landlords out of the goodness of their hearts? No, they pass those costs on to renters.

The landlords pay the tax. Indirectly paying a tax doesn't convey any responsibility for paying the tax.

A completely meaningless distinction without a difference.

Then isn't the company employing the immigrants paying the property taxes? The renters are just a pass through.

No, because workers are paid a market-clearing wage in a competitive market. Workers are - roughly speaking - paid the marginal value they create. Workers don't command raises when property taxes increase - they can ask, but the answer will likely be no unless the labor market is very tight. Rent is sensitive to property taxes in a way that wages are not.

No sane person would argue that they don't pay sales taxes because they're not the ones cutting a check to the Department of Tax Administration, the store is. But, alas, perhaps I'm not talking to one of those people.

Illegal immigrants get way more out of us than we get out of them. That’s the exact reason they’re here. If all they wanted was safety then they would have stopped in Mexico or any of the other countries they passed through instead of coming here.

And no, their kids should not get free education. It’s not “free” - we pay for it. And we pay even more for illegals since their kids have much greater needs that we need to address.

Send them all back and permanently end birthright citizenship to stop the future tide of them too. Even Democratic representatives and senators will vote to end birthright citizenship since they know that’s where the vast majority of the country stands on this.

I wouldn't represent the majority of the county until we see the data.

BTW, making the topic from tax raise to immigrants does not make any sense here. If we don't like tax raise, we need to protest against it, not picking up the wars between different groups. I believe all the posts here mentioned the immigrants are trying to change people's attention from the actual tax raise. They may be the bots hired by some county board.

Well we can’t just print money. So if you want to spend more money then you need to raise taxes to pay for it unless you’re willing to make big cuts somewhere else. How else do you think we should pay for these things?
