But no one wants to admit that a huge part of the FCPS and county budget is going toward helping illegal immigrants.
Helping in which way that it sucks up so much budget?
Most of it is language services but they also mention "other services." $142 million was spent last year alone on the ESOL population. We should not be cutting fire and police services. FCPS should stop or cut back those services and make sure the teachers get their raises. Whatever they spend for adult ESOL services should also be cut. Why is FCPS even offering that?
Because it’s better for society if they learn English? Were you born stupid or were you dropped on your head or what?
Or they can go to school in their home countries and learn in their native language.
This is the point. If here illegally, they should not benefit from legal residents' taxes. If here legally, they chose to come here and are responsible for their own integration into society, including acquiring language skills necessary for assimilation. It should not be the responsibility of federal, state, or local governments to facilitate their assimilation when they moved here of their own volition.
How do you think a 5 year old can be responsible for their own integration into society? Are you that stupid? And just how many foreign languages do you speak well enough to graduate from high school or college with it? I'm guessing zero.
That 5-year old illegal is not my problem, except to the extent the County raises my taxes so he can be educated on my dime. If he's documented, he's still not my problem. His parents can teach him, or can pay for classes - they should not have immigrated with the expectation that their host country would bear the cost of raising their children beyond what native English speakers receive in the way of public education.
+1. They need to go back.
You are saying legal immigrants whose 5 year olds don't speak English have to go back? That's messed up. I didn't think schools offer special instruction for kids who don't speak English at all. Do they?
That person is saying that legal immigrants should receive the same services as citizens, no more, no less. If someone immigrates legally, that's a voluntary choice, and they should be responsible for their own integration into their host society. Learning English is their responsibility; it should not be a cost imposed on taxpaying citizens, any more than should be finding employment, procuring housing, obtaining a car, or any of the other aspect of daily life. If you come here, it should be because you have the means to support your self. That includes having the means to learn the language. If charities want to provide language instruction, fine, but taxpayers should not be burdened with the expense.
