Was Wootton listed as one of the boundaries which would be impacted by Woodward?

Wootton as one of the least sensible boundaries in the entire county, since the majority of its students live closer to other schools, but don't remember it ping on that list.

If your child would enjoy a toxic competitive environment, where cram school types abound then by all means pick Wootton.

Not sure what your issue is with Wootton. HS is when kids need to learn their study skills - how to survive stressful environments, how to learn time management, how to study and how to identify situations to avoid. These are skills they will need college and beyond.

Yes Wootton is one of the top schools in the county

It is very good. You will get a lot of complaints on this board. There are good and bad teachers at every HS.

My kids got accepted from Wootton, for example at

MIT, Stanford, GA Tech, Yale, Columbia, Michigan, University of Chicago, USC, UNC, DUKE, CMU and a few others

The computer science dept at Wootton is exceptional. The English Dept needs work. Math & Science are very good

This is what I would say. Education is something no one can take away from you and Wootton does it's job. My kids all went off to college and thought most of college courses were easy, they were extremely well prepared.

If you are looking at a home in Dufief I would be warry as boundries might change. And Crown farm could be the new HS that I would not be ok with.

I actually think the English Department is quite good overall, but as with any department, there are a few teachers who aren't as good. Wootton also has an excellent Music/Fine Arts Department. Like others have said, it's a pressure cooker, high stress environment. The building is old and definitely has a mold issue.

OP here. Can you clarify what you mean by high stress? I've seen several people post about this. Is this something unavoidable in a high-performance school? Or are there other schools with less stress and similarly high performance?

Ran screaming from that hood in the early years mostly due to socialization. Do you believe in cram school for all hours? Particularly in math? Have you done this with your child since they were very young? Do you like a school that rivals schools in cities like Seoul, Taiwan and Mumbai in intensity and competitiveness? This is your place. The intellectual diaspora of the world landed in this quarter of the world and this school reflects the ‘winner take all’ mentality of intense Asian and South Asian capitals. It may be for you. It wasn’t for us.

The culture does tend towards cram school which creates a lot of pressure, but the outcomes are not all that different from any other place with similar demographics that is it performs average.

We relocated here, too, looked all over, including the W schools. We chose RM for IB and for its diversity. We moved from a wealthy area, like Whitman, and didn't like what we saw. We didn't want our kids surrounded by that kind of wealth and entitlement. RM isn't perfect by any means, but the IB magnet has been great for our DC.

You mean you didn't like the real estate prices. Isn't RM having lots of issues with violence? Yikes and good luck with that.

? The area we came from real estate prices are/were higher than the DC area. This was years ago. Our real estate agent said that we had an advantage buying here because most people who move to the DC area are from lower col areas and get sticker shock when they try to buy here. We had the opposite reaction; we were giddy with how much house we could for the same price of our previous home.

But as to RM having issues.. yes, we are are aware. Still, my kids really like it there, and RMIB is worth it. DC was not challenged at all in MS. Our other DC also likes RM a lot, and knowing this DC, I don't think would be happy at Wootton.

But we have friends in the Wootton cluster, and they seem happy there, too.

OP, here's the summary:

Wootton is a high pressure environment where a ton of kids do very well, some who have tutors and prep classes. The building is falling apart, and some of the neighborhoods will be rezoned to Crown HS. The sports is lackluster, and it is considered one of the least diverse (SES and race) in the cluster, if you care about any of that.

That's the good and bad, in a nutshell.

This is such a strange post. I have 2 graduates and 1 presently enrolled. In all the years I’ve been a parent there, I’ve known very few who left without moving. I know 1 who came from private school and decided to return. And 1 who left for mental health reasons to transfer to a program at RMHS.

Drugs are everywhere so I’m sure there are kids using at every school, but none of my 3 have ever been pressured to use drugs or encountered use during the school day. As far as bullying, that also happens everywhere, but its been handled better at Wootton that at the feeders we attended (we have firsthand experience in that area). Is it somewhat of a pressure cooker? Yes, the kids are often very driven to succeed. For one of my kids, this kept her on track because she lacked a lot of motivation, but it didn’t stress her out. For another who is very driven, we found a middle ground that worked well. For the 3rd with an IEP, it has been admittedly tough. However, we found the school staff have worked very hard to counter that pressure and help our child find his own less stressful path.

Thanks for this post. Intellectual diaspora of the world sounds like a good place to associate with. My kind of hood for sure!

No, I am in Olney area. I just wish you come up with something intelligent or, at least, something new. I mean, seriously...

Did the boys basketball team go to state regionals?

No more than any other high-school and RM has better overall SATs and college outcomes.

Thanks to IB kids. When IB kids avg is more than 700pts higher than non-IB kids, that happens.
