Wooten HS good/bad?

Anonymous
I’m looking into neighborhoods to move from out of state. Wooten is graded 7/10 in Greatschools but otherwise does anyone have opinions on it? I would want my kids in very good schools, normally 8/10 and higher but I know it’s a W school so let me know if it’s bette than the rating suggests.

Stop looking at Great schools

Yes Wootton is one of the top schools in the county

It is very good. You will get a lot of complaints on this board. There are good and bad teachers at every HS.

My kids got accepted from Wootton, for example at

MIT, Stanford, GA Tech, Yale, Columbia, Michigan, University of Chicago, USC, UNC, DUKE, CMU and a few others

The computer science dept at Wootton is exceptional. The English Dept needs work. Math & Science are very good

This is what I would say. Education is something no one can take away from you and Wootton does it's job. My kids all went off to college and thought most of college courses were easy, they were extremely well prepared.

If you are looking at a home in Dufief I would be warry as boundries might change. And Crown farm could be the new HS that I would not be ok with.

Your kid applied to more than 11 colleges? Why?

No actually mine applied to btw 6-7. But yes at Wootton most kids apply to 10 at least. Many suburban kids all over the country do this it is norma per society in the last say 15 years.

I have more than one kid. LOL

It's a good school in a terrible building.

One of the best in the county but very stressful. Applying to 10 or more colleges is nothing new.

I've never heard of Wooten. Do you mean Wootton?

Wootton offers many of the same classes and curriculum available at any MCPS HS.

The building is not great, which can attest to having visited it for athletic events, but the student body and staff appear to be decent, from what I've heard.

It's supposed to get a new building in 2029. But dates that far out can often change.

I know parents who have removed their children from Wootton because of extreme pressure, bullying, and drugs. I know children who graduated from schools like Rockville, Magruder, Sherwood, and QO who have gone to elite colleges and universities and onto law and medical school. If you lack confidence that your children can excel unless you overpay for a house, then that's fine.

GS ratings are misleading. It would be best if you looked a little deeper. For example, the county released SAT averages by high-school and demographic cohort a few years back, which helps understand the real academic opportunity in light of demographic variation, or Bethesda Beat which publishes college admissions by school.

..to go private, you mean? Because all those exist at all those other HS. Or do you actually know a parent who moved their child from Wootten to go to another public due to drugs?

OP - There are not many "good" schools left in MCPS. W-schools are still better than others but that comes with high stress. BCC is another decent school with somewhat less stress than W-schools. All others are sh*tty.
