We came from a 9/10 school in an underperforming state (Georgia) and our 6/10 school here in MoCo is much, much tougher with better standards+teachers. So it depends on where you are coming from, OP. I'd look at SAT scores, AP Scores, college acceptance rates.

Yes, further, MCPS is a very diverse county so even within any school there's often a wide range of abilities and opportunties.

Gosh, not sure where in Georgia but many counties there rival if not beat Maryland on NAEP. I know the feeling of paying high taxes and wishing you were getting your money’s worth but likely your MCPS 6 is likely the same as a Georgia 6 with a liberal bent.

Ie both states on NAEP are average

No. Our 9 was totally mediocre. Zero differentiation - we were amazed by compacted math and ELC here. Also our teachers here (and between the 2 kids, we have now interacted with 20) are so much more competent! In the south, more of the kids were red shirted -look it up, it's a thing - even their cutoff dates in some districts are in July. But we lived in a rich Atlanta suburb and everyone had high income so maybe that is why we got a 9 - we performed well compared to all the crappy schools around us.
Most people who can afford to, send their kids to private in the south. Because public education is especially bad there..also helps that private is half the price than DC.
This is why I laugh when people complain about MoCo schools....y'all have no idea how good we actually have it.

Just the small area zoned by Washingtonian Towers since it is walkable to Crown.

Yes Wootton is one of the top schools in the county

It is very good. You will get a lot of complaints on this board. There are good and bad teachers at every HS.

My kids got accepted from Wootton, for example at

MIT, Stanford, GA Tech, Yale, Columbia, Michigan, University of Chicago, USC, UNC, DUKE, CMU and a few others

The computer science dept at Wootton is exceptional. The English Dept needs work. Math & Science are very good

This is what I would say. Education is something no one can take away from you and Wootton does it's job. My kids all went off to college and thought most of college courses were easy, they were extremely well prepared.

If you are looking at a home in Dufief I would be warry as boundries might change. And Crown farm could be the new HS that I would not be ok with.

I actually think the English Department is quite good overall, but as with any department, there are a few teachers who aren't as good. Wootton also has an excellent Music/Fine Arts Department. Like others have said, it's a pressure cooker, high stress environment. The building is old and definitely has a mold issue.

OP here. Can you clarify what you mean by high stress? I've seen several people post about this. Is this something unavoidable in a high-performance school? Or are there other schools with less stress and similarly high performance?

Ran screaming from that hood in the early years mostly due to socialization. Do you believe in cram school for all hours? Particularly in math? Have you done this with your child since they were very young? Do you like a school that rivals schools in cities like Seoul, Taiwan and Mumbai in intensity and competitiveness? This is your place. The intellectual diaspora of the world landed in this quarter of the world and this school reflects the ‘winner take all’ mentality of intense Asian and South Asian capitals. It may be for you. It wasn’t for us.

The culture does tend towards cram school which creates a lot of pressure, but the outcomes are not all that different from any other place with similar demographics that is it performs average.

I relocated from out of state to Maryland. Only Winston Churchill and Walt Whitman are the ones you want.

Wooten and Walter Johnson are the lesser W schools and it reflects in the home prices.

Now Wooten and Walter Johnson Might be fantastic schools but that does not reflect in real estate prices.

There will be major shifts at WJ and Wootton with the boundary study. Unless you move in the immediate neighborhood of the school, you will be at risk of redistricting to another school.

Sorry to be the bearer of that news.

You don't know, and neither does anybody else, which areas will be reassigned to the high school at Crown.

Was Wootton listed as one of the boundaries which would be impacted by Woodward?

Wootton as one of the least sensible boundaries in the entire county, since the majority of its students live closer to other schools, but don't remember it ping on that list.

And despite all that, it's maybe the 5th or 6th overall highest bulk stats of any MCPS school.

We relocated here, too, looked all over, including the W schools. We chose RM for IB and for its diversity. We moved from a wealthy area, like Whitman, and didn't like what we saw. We didn't want our kids surrounded by that kind of wealth and entitlement. RM isn't perfect by any means, but the IB magnet has been great for our DC.

You mean you didn't like the real estate prices. Isn't RM having lots of issues with violence? Yikes and good luck with that.

No more than any other high-school and RM has better overall SATs and college outcomes.

If your child would enjoy a toxic competitive environment, where cram school types abound then by all means pick Wootton.

No, not by Woodward. But it will be part of the upcoming Crown HS boundary study.
