Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Looking at the actual scores the county accidentally released by the demographic cohort that's not exactly true. The IB magnet makes up a small percentage of the school and would likely only impact Asians since the IB is something like 70% Asian. I think this is just a story W parents like to tell themselves to feel less mediocre. |
RM has roughly 600 students per grade. What percent of students in each grade at RM are at RM because of the IB magnet program and otherwise would not be at RM? |
It's about 550 per grade, and about 100 from outside the cluster. So, roughly 20% per grade. But as a PP stated, RMIB is mostly Asian Americans, and actually, there are quite a few RMIB students not from W clusters. |
MCPS provided the information by demographic cohort by school. RMIB is roughly 60% Asian. The average SAT for 132 Asians who took the SAT at RM that year was 1265. RMIB is roughly 20%-25% white. The average SAT for the 110 whites was 1270. My point is this doesn't seem to have a significant impact. I can crunch the numbers if we have an average for the magnet, but the ballpark is maybe 20 points. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/reports/2017/1771102HS%20Princ_SAT%20Partic_Perf%20Class%20of%202017.pdf |
True LOL. |
PP here.. I agree with you. And there are many high achieving kids at RM who choose not to do IB because of the time commitment. |
https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/rmhs/aboutus/ Above school link provides RM profile (including IB kids) and IB profile for SAT. The entire school (which includes IB kids) SAT was 1291. IB avg was 1500. If you take out IB kids from the school profile, my guess is no more than 1000 for the entire school not including IB kids. So delta of almost 500 pts between IB and regular kids. That sounds pretty significant. |
| ^ if you really want to, i am sure you can figure out exact score. all data points are there. i am not interested enough to do that though. i do enough analysis as my day job |
Interesting. According to this web site someone posted upthread. That's pretty close to typical MCPS high schools not named W schools, PHS, BCC... 1000-1100 range https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/reports/2017/1771102HS%20Princ_SAT%20Partic_Perf%20Class%20of%202017.pdf |

My kids choose Wootton over Magnets.
Because as high-stat kids interested in CS Wootton had a great CS department while they were there. From Wootton, they went off to great colleges and accepted every single place they applied. |
sure, because there is about 25% FARMs rate at the school. SAT scores usually correlate with SES, which is why W schools have high scores. |
that's great for your kid, but you know, other schools also have kids who do well on go to top schools. Wootton is not special in that way. |
And is that surprising? I don't think so. Why would lower SES/minority kids perform better at RM than Wheaton or Einstein for example? |
There are surely also many kids among the 450-500 seniors per year at Wootton who do not go off to "great colleges" and are not accepted every single place they applied. How does that go over at Wootton? |
