I don't think private school parents come here to bash Wootton but the parents from other MCPS schools sure love to beat down Wootton (or any of the W schools).

My friend whose kids go there says it's a pressure cooker and is always complaining about safety issues.

It is a high pressure environment. Noone doubts that. Safety? Compare to other schools? I'd still go with Wootton. But I don't blame your friend for worrying about kid's safety. All parents do (or should).

dp.. I'm thinking the safety issues has to do with the building and not necessarily the student body. The building is falling apart and has mold issues.

Yeah, that might be. I was assuming fights/guns/knives and stuff but you maybe right

Yes. Here is the recent Wootton cluster coordinator's testimony about the building situation:

Is that a bad thing? To upgrade an old school? I see it as a good thing. They know it's old and they are trying to address the problem.

GS ratings are misleading. It would be best if you looked a little deeper. For example, the county released SAT averages by high-school and demographic cohort a few years back, which helps understand the real academic opportunity in light of demographic variation, or Bethesda Beat which publishes college admissions by school.

Here's the report the county leaked that shows SAT scores by cohort and school. You can see Wootton ranks 5th for my demographic which is pretty good!

https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/reports/2017/1771102HS%20Princ_SAT%20Partic_Perf%20Class%20of%202017.pdf

Bethesda Beat publishes college admission data here, https://moco360.media/2020/10/05/college-bound-5/

Hope this helps clarify things. A lot of what people write here is gossip and looking at hard facts works better.

Very interesting. Keep in mind PHS, Blair, and RM have magnet students. Their avg SAT scores are skewed.

The magnet at Blair is largely Asian. I doubt the 5 white students had much of an impact on their SAT average. This is why looking at demographics helps.

Absolutely, but until the school is actually upgraded/replaced, they have to put up with the current conditions, which are bad.

IDK... Maybe a different perspective but that wouldn't bother me at all. It's not like bricks falling down and killing kids or anything.

Private schools parents come here to bash any and all MCPS schools. Most topics are dominated by Private schools parents.

True, the bricks aren't crumbing, but the tiles are .

Yes Wootton is one of the top schools in the county

It is very good. You will get a lot of complaints on this board. There are good and bad teachers at every HS.

My kids got accepted from Wootton, for example at

MIT, Stanford, GA Tech, Yale, Columbia, Michigan, University of Chicago, USC, UNC, DUKE, CMU and a few others

The computer science dept at Wootton is exceptional. The English Dept needs work. Math & Science are very good

This is what I would say. Education is something no one can take away from you and Wootton does it's job. My kids all went off to college and thought most of college courses were easy, they were extremely well prepared.

If you are looking at a home in Dufief I would be warry as boundries might change. And Crown farm could be the new HS that I would not be ok with.

I actually think the English Department is quite good overall, but as with any department, there are a few teachers who aren't as good. Wootton also has an excellent Music/Fine Arts Department. Like others have said, it's a pressure cooker, high stress environment. The building is old and definitely has a mold issue.

Dp, that post was perfectly fine and far more helpful than your snotty post. What’s your point?
