| I have cut my calories down to 1200 (more if I am doing exercise) and am starving. Any idea how long it takes to get used to this and stop feeling hungry all the time? |
| If you're "starving" then eat healthy snacks. |

In about 6 weeks, the hunger will be much, much more manageable. It won't feel like an urgent issue, it will be more of a whisper than a roar.
How to fix: 1) for me, walking a lot is key to keeping hunger in check 2) go to bed early to sleep more, so you have more of a feeling of control 3) drink loads of water in the morning when you wake up Deciding to stick it out through hunger is the key to effective dieting. It is temporary, and those hunger pangs are false. You don't need more than 1200 calories per day. |

Crazy talk.
You don't need to feel hungry if you don't want to and it's not a vital part of weight loss. that doesn't mean you won't feel hungry at first. We are so used to being over full, that being just right feels wrong. Volume is everything. Have high water/ fiber content and low calorie fruits and vegetables when you're hungry. Produce is your friend! Up your calories. 1200 is patently unsustainable for anyone but the eating disordered crew. You should aim for 1400-1600 and slower weight loss. It's more likely to stay off that way anyway. |
| And move more!! |

When I lost weight and kept it off for years, I wasn't hungry. I ate ton of high fiber foods - shredded wheat, popcorn, vegetables - and water, and I exercised a lot.
Currently I'm trying to lose weight just by eating less but I'm not moving more - it works but I'm hungry. I agree that sleeping and drinking more help, and you can reduce the volume youR body is used TO taking in.... but only a little bit. Moving more so that you can eat but still lose is the way to avoid hunger. |

My stomach did get smaller after 2-3 weeks. Truly, because I stopped wanting to eat massive meals. Had a cheat day and ate a ton and my stomach could barely fit it all in.
In the meantime, fill up on ~4 veggies a day, ~2 fruits a day, more protein than you think - I mean not exactly that, but in general that’s what I do, and I’ve lost 10 pounds. |
Also limiting fat. Give yourself some healthy fats in small amounts, because you do need it. But in limited amounts. When we exercise it signals the fat cells to bust open and let go of the lipids inside. The cell wall remains there, permanently. So if you fill yourself back up with fat and sugar, the fat cells accept it back in. If you cut out fat and sugar, there won’t be anything to accept back in. Instead your muscle will repair themselves with the protein you add. Again, you’ll need some fat and oils, but focus more on veggies to fill you and give you nutrients; and then protein. |
| I rarely feel hungry because I’m on a 1450 calorie a day plan, losing weight a few pounds a month. I don’t account for exercise in my count, so occasionally I’m really hungry if I’ve had a bigger work out than usual. In that case, I’ll allow myself 100-150 more calories and will have more water or herbal tea. |
| If I am 51 female with moderate to low exercise (walking maybe 10 miles a week), is 1200 still ridiculous? I need to lose 20 pounds, don't need to do it quickly but I was doing 1200 calories per day. Folks here are saying don't go below 1400 is that even for someone older like me? |
| I am 5"2 and unless I am exercising every day, a 1200 calorie diet is ideal for weight loss and then moving to a 1400 or 1600 calorie maintenance diet. 1200 is not ridiculous the shorter and older you are. |
DP here and I'm short and can only lose weight when aiming for around 1200 calories. Tired of taller people not realizing what difference inches make in how much a person can eat. Not everyone is 5'5" and taller. |
| I find gum to be helpful when I am hungry. |
How is walking a lot key to keeping your hunger in check? Physical activity increases the appetite more. |
Hello. I am the PP and I am 5ft 1 and over 45. 1200 only works if you're completely sedentary or if you're trying to lose too quickly. If you are, that's a problem that needs to be fixed. The next poster who said she walks a lot and isn't hungry as much because she can afford more calories is just like me. I move as much as I can and burn about 2200 calories on a non workout day. I eat 1500-1600 to lose and 1800-1900 to maintain. With feast days here and there. |
