Totally! The flashbacks in HT are all about creeping social and governmental restriction of gender roles. The bathroom bill is a solid example. The right wing pearl clutching about the boy scouts is another. Transgender military ban, etc. Melania is totally relevant. She represents both surface reverance for a regressive gender-specific ideal (she shows up, she is beautiful and deferential, and she rarely speaks) and the obvious breakdown of the theoretically underpinning morality. She’s his third wife and his constant philandering and related shenanigans renders her carefully crafted image ridiculous or at least a little sad as long as she publicly ignores it. Melania is very blue lady. To be clear, I don’t care what arrangement Melania has with her husband and she’s under no obligation to discuss it. I think a big part of the problem is the role of First Lady and I would love to see it go away or be blown up by Melania or someone else. I hate to be even a little critical of Michelle O, but she very deliberately (with good cause, I know!) left that on the table. But there’s no question that Melania is relevant to the GOP, particularly the men in power, claiming the mantle of Christianity or a family-centered morality while very consistently and obviously living otherwise themselves. Which is extremely related to Gilead. Again, not saying we’re on a path to Gilead or anything but to deny the obvious connections is to be deliberately obtuse. |
You know Melaniia rarely speaks and how? Maybe instead of being deferential she just doesn’t give a sh$t? In terms of the men in power - this has been going on since the beginning of time. It certainly didn’t start with the GOP. Regarding the bathroom bill, I see it as the exact opposite. That we have come so far in breaking down gender roles that legislation is required to keep men out of the ladies room. |
Sorry, she rarely speaks publicly. Like I said, I’m happy for whatever she wants, but she is part of a very sick and twisted public dance between political evangelicalism and Trump/the GOP that is super Gilead-y. No you have the thing about the bathroom bill exactly right. “We have come so far in breaking down gender roles that legislation is required” would be exactly the justification for the early Gilead rules, right? For the sake of children, for the Home and honoring one’s husband, etc. Transgender women are not a threat to anyone in the bathroom. The bill is totally about your outrage at the notion of transgender women being treated as women. |
^total alarmist.
Maybe this is the show for you. |
I’ve read the book, and two others. I’m currently reading Orxy and Crake. |

I liked The Handmaid's Tale because it's such a great story, but her writing matures in her later books. I love her historical novels. I read the first book in the MADDADDAM trilogy but it was too dark for me. I read a lot of dystopian stuff, but I couldn't handle the sexual violence in the book. |
Episode 3 in the 2nd season was just so unrelenting. Even though the unwomen scenes in episode 2 were harsh, somehow it was easier to watch. |
Yeah.... I'm going to give it a few more episodes but this one didn't impress me. I wondered how they would continue it. |
I read the book in HS and then ended up reading several other Margaret Atwood books in college. Her later work is superior and has matured but Handmaids Tale is perfect for a modern day drama.
The parallels are obvious to most, and it’s action heavy. I like the show and will continue watching it until it ends (I predict season 4 and then gone). This season has been heavy handed but enjoyable. It’s harder to watch than season 1 and I didn’t like episode 3 but I have high hopes it will improve. I’m a lesbian with two kids, DW and I have a son around the same age as Emily’s son I’m the airport scene. We had to pause and take breathers often. I have a huge fear of getting separated by my family during a national crisis. DW and I did a lot to make sure we were as legally protected as possibly if shit hits the fan. Married in a true blue state, reciprocal IVF, gave birth in state that allows both names on birth certificate and did sexond parent adoptions. Terrifying to know the child I gave birth to could not be taken away. I think this show is especially terrifying for marginalized people, who realize this could happen. It has happened to a lot of us. I wish they’d cover more race issue, so many questions the book never answers. I wonder how closely MA is working with production? |
I'm really not happy with where this season is going. I was so hopeful in the beginning, but now after the last couple episodes they are clearly slowing down the story. Is it just going to be more of the same? I mean they can't possibly let Serena have her baby right?!?! |
This season is more of the same. I watched the first 3 episodes and I am not interested in watching it anymore. |
I agree. I really can’t watch multiple episodes of mind games and torture. I really don’t know where they are going to take this next week, except down the same paths we have already been on. |
This week's episode broke my heart. Are we going to find out how the bread guys family was caught? |
