We could also pass laws to make sure guns used in commission of crime are destroyed.
They are resold in some jurisdictions. We need a 2 prong assault on these guns. Stop the manufacture Destroy them when they creep into public life. And to those who say, “ what if it was stolen?” If you didn’t secure your gun, it shouldn’t be returned. |
Please don’t try to impress us. There are people who know more about weapons and their history than you. It’s laughable you are bringing the Winchester here - you know damn well (I assume) that despite powerful ballistics from a single shot, it is not comparable to the damage caused by near 1000 rounds spent in the mere span of a few minutes at these massacres. If you had educated yourself, you would know that the top weapon enthusiasts, including those at Smith&Wesson had great reservations marketing their AR-15 style rifle to the public, especially in the manner they did. Corporate greed won, and the rest is history. There are many ways to chart a path forward. Sitting back and doing nothing is dismal. |
This is a catastrophically stupid post. |
Yes. Multi-prong. None of it new, people have already put lots of thought into it. So many possibilities and options. Raise age, waiting period, mandatory classes and licenses. Restrict ammunition. Tax++ ammunition. Manufacturers have to pay into a proportional (to damage caused) “dead, disabled, and injured fund”, irrespective of guilt/fault. Similar exists already for certain professions/industries, irrespective of who was at fault or no fault. Mental health screenings initial and after waiting period. Then again to reregister/license. The media/culture prong - glorified violence/culture of violence, too easy to access, nobody is responsible? Why the appeal? Flood with kindness/ make kindness cool. Parenting: Hold parents legally accountable- many are responsible, but many are not at all, like those who bought their son weapons knowing he had mental health problems, those who leave them out and around for little kids to grab. Mental health prong - it’s too difficult to get mental health care, and too expensive, have to wait 2 minutes to buy a rifle, but 2 years to see a NeuroPsych, the insanity of that. No psych beds in country, youth psych even worse, spent 48 hrs in ER waiting for inpatient, record is one week wait in an ER hallway. Ridiculous conditions, nothing has changed. Nothing has improved no matter who has been in power. However, all around access is undoubtedly the paramount aspect here. |
| The problem is that a very small minority of people hold our entire country hostage to these insane (lack of) gun laws. |
+1000 Agree completely. |

In response to those who think it's primarily a mental health problem (the easy, and frankly lazy, NRA talking point), the Maine shooter, whose mental health challenges were obvious to everyone, DID receive mental health services.
"Two senior law enforcement officials said Card’s unit commanders sent him to receive psychiatric treatment this summer after they became concerned about threats he made to the base and his claims that he was hearing voices. Card spent about two weeks undergoing inpatient psychiatric treatment and was released, the officials said. It is not clear what further action was taken. A Defense Department official said Card’s unit requested that law enforcement be contacted in July after he began behaving erratically. New York State Police responded and took him to Keller Army Community Hospital at the U.S. Military Academy for medical evaluation." https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/family-maine-shooting-suspect-says-mental-health-deteriorated-rapidly-rcna122353 But the larger context is that access to mental health is difficult for everyone but the wealthiest. Here's the situation in Maine: https://abcnews.go.com/Health/maine-run-challenges-address-mental-health-experts/story?id=104603347 Not to mention that the GOP refuses to approve increased funding for mental health services. They like to talk about it in relation to gun violence--they just don't want to pay for it. |
oh, please, the Rs don't even want ACA which covers mental health. They also didn't want people diagnosed with mental health illness to be put on a list that bans the purchase of guns. You're either ignorant, dumb, or so in love with your gun that you can't think straight -- I guess all three. And doctors have described the carnage that an AR15 can do to a body. https://news.yahoo.com/what-can-an-ar-15-do-to-the-human-body-a-trauma-surgeon-explains-204850785.html |

indeed.. and that's why we have so many mass shootings. |
Yes, I am sure there are people who know more about weapons than I do. Also certain that no where near a thousand rounds were spent at these mass shootings. Aware that same effect could have occurred with a bolt action rifle or a couple of 9mm handguns. Why? Although mentally ill most mass shooters pick places where they are the only on with the gun. So they are in a position of power until a good guy with a gun shows up. Whoops that happened at Uvalde but response was still poor. Addressing Americas mental health issue is moving forward, enforcing existing gun laws is moving forward, looking people who commit gun crimes for a mandatory term of 25 years would be moving forward. Developing smart guns that could only be used by the purchaser would move things forward. No straw purchases or stolen gun use. |
Blah blah blah gun nut. Did you look at the pictures yet? You’re not going to, are you? Try this one, instead, you coward. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/interactive/2023/ar-15-damage-to-human-body/ |
Vegas shooting. "He fired more than 1,000 rounds, killing 60 people and wounding at least 413." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Las_Vegas_shooting Your bolt action rifle or a couple 9mm handguns could do that? |
Of course not. The AR-15 is so good at what it does because it is a highly efficient weapon - mobile, high velocity, low recoil, and ability to hold large magazines of mid-sized cartridges. There are more powerful firearms, but with the trade-off of high recoil and requiring more reloads. The AR-15 is an efficient death machine that has little practical use for self-defense or hunting. |
This is where I stand. They also need to release the audio of the Uvalde children screaming from the classroom before they were massacred. Hiding the reality of the NRA’s death grip (no pun) on our politics is doing this country harm. [NP] |
