We could also pass laws to make sure guns used in commission of crime are destroyed. They are resold in some jurisdictions. We need a 2 prong assault on these guns. Stop the manufacture Destroy them when they creep into public life. And to those who say, “ what if it was stolen?” If you didn’t secure your gun, it shouldn’t be returned.
Yes. Multi-prong. None of it new, people have already put lots of thought into it. So many possibilities and options. Raise age, waiting period, mandatory classes and licenses. Restrict ammunition. Tax++ ammunition. Manufacturers have to pay into a proportional (to damage caused) “dead, disabled, and injured fund”, irrespective of guilt/fault. Similar exists already for certain professions/industries, irrespective of who was at fault or no fault. Mental health screenings initial and after waiting period. Then again to reregister/license. The media/culture prong - glorified violence/culture of violence, too easy to access, nobody is responsible? Why the appeal? Flood with kindness/ make kindness cool. Parenting: Hold parents legally accountable- many are responsible, but many are not at all, like those who bought their son weapons knowing he had mental health problems, those who leave them out and around for little kids to grab. Mental health prong - it’s too difficult to get mental health care, and too expensive, have to wait 2 minutes to buy a rifle, but 2 years to see a NeuroPsych, the insanity of that. No psych beds in country, youth psych even worse, spent 48 hrs in ER waiting for inpatient, record is one week wait in an ER hallway. Ridiculous conditions, nothing has changed. Nothing has improved no matter who has been in power. However, all around access is undoubtedly the paramount aspect here.
