35,000 to 40,000...wow. So did you recently discover what it's like to find a stat that is almost--but not quite--a rounding error? |
Again, I’m only academically interested in the topic, and how it plays out when intelligent discussion is eclipsed by shrill red tribe versus blue tribe emotionality. I’m a registered Democrat, don’t own any long arms, and have one VERY old (100+ year old) .38 special revolver that was passed down, and probably hasn’t been shot in 30 years. There aren’t any Sandy Hook families here, but if there were I would tell them that I’ll never be a proponent of loser proposals pushed by people who don’t care to educate themselves on the specifics of the matter, or proposals that don’t pass a basic cost/benefit analysis. I would be sympathetic to their loss in the same way I’d be sympathetic to the much larger number of families who lose a loved one to autoerotic asphyxiation every year, but if an Republican politician proposed “autoeroticism control”, I would deride their irrationality too. |
| What is this much larger number of people who die from auto erotic asphyxiation each year? |
Go shoot skeet all day everyday. No one cares. Have it be a constitutional amendment that everyone is entitled to shoot skate. No one cares. If this country wants to reduce the legality and availability of certain weapons, it is entitled to do so |
|
And is it dangerous to go to schools, synagogues, concerts, and movies because you may accidentally die due to auto erotic asphyxiation?
And will the numbers of people who don’t officially die from an episode, include many who are injured, maimed, and/or traumatized? Just asking questions here. |
According to the NIH, around 250 to 1000 per year, and the reporting rate is probably low and muddled with other suicide data (for obvious reasons). I’m comparing that against the FBI homicide rate by rifle of around 350 per year, then (to determine “AR” deaths), I’m extrapolating the percent of detachable box magazines (including non-AR pattern) in circulation (per the best estimates from the NSSF) to non detachable box magazine rifle estimates. If the incident rate is equally distributed by rifle type that would have about 60 deaths per year on average for detachable box magazine semi automatic rifles, but I’ll double that to 120 to give the benefit of the doubt. That would put autoerotic asphyxiation deaths at two to eight times the incident rate of homicide by someone using a detachable box magazine semi auto rifle. “AR” rifle homicides probably fall in the same general area as bee / wasp deaths per year (around 100), lawnmower deaths (90 to 100), and deaths by falling off a ladder (about 160 according to the BLS). |
Number one killer of kids. |
|
Look I grew up hunting, still go once in a while with my dad and uncle and cousins. I’m in no way interested in taking guns away. And yet it is idiotic to think that stricter gun laws won’t have an impact on lowering gun deaths. I have no problem getting a license, or putting other inconveniences in place for sport shooters if it helps prevent mass murder.
And someone who compares the slaughter of six year olds to autoerotic asphyxiation as if they are in any way related, I cannot take seriously. |
I’m not saying they’re related. I’m saying that the incidence of deaths by rifle homicide is so small that it’s similar to or less than lots of things you don’t go through life being “scared” of, such as ladders and lawnmowers and falling out of bed. And yet, I’ve known some of my fellow Democrats who have become so emotion-driven that (and I’m NOT making this up) they have told me they’ve heard sirens in their neighborhood and had a panic attack because they’re worried about someone with a rifle. And I’ve known some who are so tremendously ignorant on the technicalities of the subject that they can’t have an intelligent conversation. So what happens is the Hysterical Old Biddy crowd lumps all firearm related deaths together, to include suicide, young men shooting each other by the thousands (usually related to gang violence), hunting accidents, etc. and we end up looking stupid and not deserving to be taken seriously. This is why the first thing I want to hear from someone, such as a political candidate, is their stance on “AR” rifles — because it’s usually a good acid test to quickly gauge whether or not they deserve to be taken seriously. |
+1 He can claim he didn’t mean to draw comparisons, but he still picked that specific cause of death. Just weird and frankly a little gross. I wonder if Mr Registered Democrat would at least support keeping guns out of the hands of the deeply mentally ill and domestic abusers. |
Ok. We are aware of your fixation about that. |
I picked it out of the list of low-incident causes of death because it’s a good example of something that (I would imagine) practically nobody has ever dealt with firsthand, and certainly nobody irrationally loses sleep over. I doubt that my acquaintance who has a rifle-related panic attack upon hearing sirens has considered that the paramedics are MORE likely rushing to resuscitate her husband who was doing that. Actually I may have to use that line to mock her hysteria. Yes, I ABSOLUTELY would suggest going REALLY hard after anyone who tries to buy a firearm in violation of any of the stipulations on the ATF form 4473. That form includes straw purchases, anyone adjudicated mentally defective, drug users, and misdemeanor (or greater) domestic violence. And for that matter, expand the 4473 list to include a lot more exclusions for theft, burglary, DUI, etc. Then give hard prison time to anyone in violation. As much as the stories of “someone suddenly snapping” grab the headlines, they are extraordinarily rare statistical outliers. Almost all violent crime is committed by a very small number of aberrant individuals with a long history of aberrant behavior. |
There’s ZERO chance my 7 and 9 year old are going to die of autoerotic asphyxiation, you psycho. Of course I don’t lose sleep over it. |
You use a LOT of words to say absolutely nothing. And why do I sense that your “registered Democrat” means that you’re actually a fairly far right winger who just likes the idea of wreaking havoc in Democratic primaries. Oh I know why - you say a lot of words to mean nothing and end up sounding like one of those right wingers high on his own supply. |
One thing’s for sure. The longwinded PP likes the sound of his own voice. And thinks he’s smarter and more rational than everyone else. |
