Shockingly graphic photo essay on the destruction caused by AR-15's in today's WP

I have a PhD in behavioral science .

Let me assure you, our ability to predict who will kill themselves or others is very limited.

Similarly, it is difficult to legally detain someone who has not already committed violence. Nor can we force outpatients to take their prescribed medicine.

So, mental health treatment is far from the panacea being portrayed.

Oh, and the Las Vegas shooter had never received a mental health diagnosis, nor do we know what his motive was.

A ban on that type of weapon though, could have prevented his horrific death toll.

But the insecure incels defending these weapons of war will never listen to reason.
I just do not know why we let them rule the day.

Voting Democratic is the only path to achieving change.

(Please don’t decide that paying lower taxes is worth the blood of more children…)

Weapons of war? No. It's a firearm. I'm sure you would love to ban them and then go after semiautomatic pistols next. No going to happen.

Even in the 1994 AWB, none were retroactively confiscated. More to the point, even sheriffs all over the country will tell you to go pound sand when you try.

You just proved this poster to be correct about you.

The fact that people lack the basic thinking skills to recognize the impact of such powerful weapons is perhaps the greatest tragedy.

Or maybe it is that not everyone buys into the hype/propaganda about the AR-15. First the name, the AR does not stand for assault rifle but rather for Armalite the company that first made the rifle. Second, the typical deer hunting rifle, a .308 Winchester, has a greater ballistic capability. Third these hunting rifles can easily be equipped with 20 round magazines, yes the bolt action design of the rifle slows firing speed but it is still a very effective weapon. Do you plan to take away everyone’s hunting rifle as well. I

Don’t get me wrong mass shootings are horrific and terrible events, but the AR-15 that everyone wants to get rid of has been around since the 1950’s, a good 40 years before we began to see mass shootings at schools and other venues.

Want to stop mass shootings, improve mental health screenings and treatment. Get people with mental illness into treatment and where necessary confinement. That is how you will stop mass shootings.

People with mental illness will always find a way to do harm. In countries with restricted access to guns they do it by driving vehicles into pedestrian only spaces.

Fix the root cause of the problem for once.

Please don’t try to impress us. There are people who know more about weapons and their history than you. It’s laughable you are bringing the Winchester here - you know damn well (I assume) that despite powerful ballistics from a single shot, it is not comparable to the damage caused by near 1000 rounds spent in the mere span of a few minutes at these massacres. If you had educated yourself, you would know that the top weapon enthusiasts, including those at Smith&Wesson had great reservations marketing their AR-15 style rifle to the public, especially in the manner they did. Corporate greed won, and the rest is history.

There are many ways to chart a path forward. Sitting back and doing nothing is dismal.

And yet orders of magnitude more people die every year from handguns.

Similarly, it is difficult to legally detain someone who has not already committed violence. Nor can we force outpatients to take their prescribed medicine. This needs to change. If outpatients don’t take meds they are no longer outpatients. Guy in Lewiston Maine should not have been walking the street.

So, mental health treatment is far from the panacea being portrayed.

Probably has something to do with the fact that there are an estimated 72 million handguns in the US and 20 million AR-15s. And having seen the stashes of people bragging about their arsenals, those assault rifles are probably, on average, concentrated in the hands of the looniest.

Wow. I am not going to be ok after looking through that story. Thank you Washington Post. We need to see this.

The photos of Emmett Till left decades long impact. The photos of all of the Mai Lai Massacre left a long lasting impact. Show the public what keeps happening in our schools.

The photo where the shooter wrote "LOL" on the whiteboard in a child's blood is so disturbing though.

This is where I stand. They also need to release the audio of the Uvalde children screaming from the classroom before they were massacred.

Hiding the reality of the NRA’s death grip (no pun) on our politics is doing this country harm.

I will always wonder how the numerous responding officers who listened to that and yet still didn't help those children can stand to live with themselves.

Law enforcement appears to be terrified of this weapon...or else why was a single shooter with an AR-15 allowed to go on a rampage in an elementary school for over an hour...with armed law enforcement standing in and around the building?

+1 Police Chiefs and Sheriffs used to support reasonable gun control provisions for this reason.

Vast majority is a bit of an overstatement at the national level - https://news.gallup.com/poll/1645/guns.aspx but probably accurate in DCUM land.

People answer polls like this, then vote differently on election day.

Kind of like how Clinton was leading the polls in 2016 and then...

When faced with the actual reality of stricter gun laws and less convenience, few gun owners vote for that.

You would be correct. They said so themselves.

Ugh. I can’t anymore. Why can’t we be like Australia or Switzerland with this?

Any and all of these lawmakers and judges should be put in a lockdown with their families and feel what it’s like to be hunted with weapons you don’t stand a chance. They need to experience that terror and grief. It’s unbelievable how they lack all empathy and sense.

You may certainly denounce your citizenship at any time, and leave.

I have 2 little girls. I'm a supporter of 2A (as it was written, NOT as it has been exploited by the NRA), and I can't imagine how any parent can look at these photos, imagine the abject terror of those children huddled together in their last seconds of life, and yet turn around and argue in support of the right to own a gun that literally mows people down.
And spare me the "good guy with a gun" argument. Uvalde proved that is a farce.

Well then stop voting Republican people. They are OWNED by the NRA, and dependent on gun nuts for their survival.

Nah, you're incorrect.
