That’s great! Nice that it (clearly) worked out. I’d place skywalkers right there in the mix with YJ and M&D. I guess it’s really no different than any travel team if you take practice out of it! Maybe we could make this work...would have to get my kid there and see if she makes the cut first.

Really? Did it? I would not want to put all that time and money into my DD playing lacrosse just to have her end up at a school like StonyBrook. Its a really low rated school. If her DD was playing at Princeton, UPenn, any Ivy really, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Duke, Georgetown, or Boston College, sure those schools are worth all that time money and commitment to a sport if it gets your kid there for college but... Stonybrook? Um, no. The entire point, for most people, is to leverage the sport to get your kid into a great college. Lacrosse isnt football or basketball. The end result is not a lucrative career. There is no such thing for girls in lacrosse. Even Taylor Cummings is having to hustle her tail off to make a career and she is the best women's lax player ever (3x Tewaaraton winner). So getting your kid into StonyBrook, even if its lax team was ranked #1 in the country, is not, it "working out."

Wow! Way to go off the rails. "Their daughter will be playing this weekend at Stony Brook" means her team is in the Final Four of the Women's Lacrosse National Championship, which is being played in . . . wait for it . . . Stony Brook. So, yes, it did kind of work out for her since all 4 schools are pretty good academically. Now apologize for being hasty.

+1.

There are plenty of nice colleges M&D, Skywalkers Alum end up playing but also plenty of not so great colleges. If I'm shelling out all that money to rent a house, plane tickets, etc. my daughter had better leverage her lacrosse skills into gaining entry into a top college not a place like Loch Haven or Slippery Rock.

Ummm no. The only school in the final four I would be okay with my kid attending is BC.

Really??? You think all 4 of those schools are "pretty good academically"? I totally disagree. Only BC is a good school among those 4.

I would be okay with my kid attending any of the Final Four schools, but I wouldn't feel it necessary to invest lots of money/time into lacrosse while my daughter is growing up to use as leverage to get into those schools. They should be able to get into those schools without lacrosse.

The school she chose had the program she wanted to pursue and was allowed to take by the coach. I didn't even know the coach could basically veto certain majors. It's a TON of work and there's literally no off season, but she's had a great experience so it's worked out for her. But, I understand the comments about the investment v quality of school. I'm always surprised when people are excited for their kid to attend a school with a good lax program but lower academics. Stony Brook & Denver (I get it - get coach but he's not at Princeton anymore) come to mind and it feels like HPU is joining that kind of conversation, though the program is not nearly as strong. But, like my friend's kid, those schools may be the perfect fit for the kid's that select them (finances, major, location, etc).

One of the best players I've seen this year takes the draw for McDonogh. I happened to sit next to her family and we chatted about the program and her experience. She's going to Duke and someone sitting near us who was listening said, "Ah, that's too bad - she'll never play for a championship." I was stunned. Really? Her dad must have heard similar comments because he just smiled & played it cool.

I think you are assuming that every kid is a great student when you say things like that. There are plenty of terrible students (but great kids) that would love to get into Stony Brook or UNC or Maryland or other schools you don't find acceptable for your kids. Those kids should not be judged harshly because they "leveraged" their lacrosse into a school that was good for them but not good for your family or your higher standards. There is a place for everyone, and just because your kid gets into what you consider a better school doesn't mean they will be more successful. Give all of these kids credit for achieving their own goals.

Dude, Stony Brook isn't even in the final four. They got beat by BC last round. The actual final four for women is: Maryland, UNC, James Madison, and BC.

No, but the tournament is being played at Stony Brook. That's where the original criticism started.

Damn - JMU over UNC. That sucks. The UMD v BC game is one for the ages though. Really can’t tell who will win.

You look down on UMD and UNC? By any reasonable measure they are pretty good academically. (Nothing against JMU--I just don't know it).

Not really, they are both just mediocre state schools although UNC is slightly better. And JMU is a step down from them both.

Early Predictions for 2019 Season (HS Boys)

1. Gonzaga - a huge school, always has the numbers to re-load. Well coached!
2. Bullis - rumors that a few marquee transfers are leaving the school after this year as are are some of the DCE coaches. Bulldogs could easily drop further.
3. GP - we have been hearing for years how strong this 2019 class is, will this be the year GP finally gets back into the IAC Championship? Always has the athletes but coaching is suspect
4. SJC - Kevin Plank is pouring money into SJC lacrosse program similar to what they have been doing for football. Look for the CADETS to have several studs from Annapolis on their roster next Spring
5. Landon - end of the Bordley era! Will be interesting to see how Landon performs next Spring without Epstein leading the offense. Bears graduated a strong senior class. Always well coached.
6. Paul VI - fresh off a VISSA state title and WCAC runner-up, expect the Panthers to contend again for a WCAC title. Despite losing strong senior class, PVI is super athletic in always in the "hunt"
7. SS/SA - graduate a deep and talented senior class. It will be a rebuilding year in Alexandria next Spring. Still have the best FOGO in the region
8. Bishop O'Connell - Coach Giblin is now in his 3rd year, he has quietly built a foundation in Arlington. Look for the Knights to hang with some teams who they have not been able to compete with in the past.
9. Episcopal - rumors that the Maroon are bringing in some Canadian's next Fall to play some lacrosse. EHS returns most of their team from last season and their JV team was very strong.
10. STA - return their FOGO. Next Level connection is gradually paying off as a few more lacrosse players are ending up at STA. Lack the athletes will always hurt STA, very hard for them to contend with a full season in the IAC.

HM: (no order)
1. Churchill - play one of the schools mentioned above in this list!
2. The Heights - needs to play a tougher schedule!
3. Riverside - Leesburg school has some athletes and a flurry of D1 commits.
4. Robinson - largest public school in NOVA always re-loads.
