St Stephens plays Gonzaga Saturday.

Bunch of kids still in b-ball and hockey. So I would imagine a mixed bag in terms of who can play in these scrimmages. But to see the season getting going!

Not many laxers in the private play hoops. They aren’t good enough.

Probably because with the rise of AAU culture, basketball requires year round commitment. Many top lax players are also stars for their HS football, hockey, soccer and wrestling programs--just look at Landon.

If anyone is tracking scrimmages today, please let other know how their teams performed.

I believe Gonzaga and St. Stephens scrimmage today and Landon and McDonogh have their annual joint practice before they scrimmage.

I know sssas has two lax starters who play b-ball

St. Stephen’s and Gonzaga scrimmaged for two quarters. It was 5-3 St. Stephen’s. Lots and lots of subbing on both sides. Much more like a practice than a game. Wouldn’t read much into the score.

Some students/lax players just want new surroundings, while some are interested in a certain coach, others leave their school due to a conflict with a coach or a coach leaves for another school. Leave the kids alone that transfer and just discuss lacrosse.

I graduated from an IAC school and loved every minute of it. With that said, IAC absolutely offer scholarships for athletes. They might call it “need-based”, but make no mistake that they are there because of athletics.

Two years ago, your administration accepted a Tranfer who attended 4 different schools in four years.

Bobby Horsey and McGill are punks. Money grabbing club coaches.

+1 they talk a good game but that's where it ends.

I think there are two different scenarios:

1. School aggressively recruits athlete and admits him with the athletics as the plus factor that gets him into the school. If admissions were based only on academics, he might not get an offer. Athlete then qualifies for aid under regular analysis of financial need.

2. Same as above, but school awards a scholarship calling it a "merit scholarship" or maybe just "financial aid," to a star athlete that either wouldn't qualify for financial aid at all or would get it at a different level were he a regular applicant and not an athletic star. I know of two IAC schools currently doing this. One is more aggressive -- awarding full scholarships to upperclassmen who probably would not need any aid under conventional analysis -- and the other is a little more subtle but uses "merit aid" and super generous financial aid awards to reel in athletes. Maybe other IAC schools are doing it also, but these two for sure do.

We've personally experienced a combo of these 2 scenarios at a non-IAC, non-Catholic private. The only part I'm not sure on is someone receiving merit who wouldn't qualify for FA. We aren't aware of anyone receiving 100% packages though but for top athletes in sports the school favors, I would bet it happens some. I do think they want family buy-in - as it helps many kids stay on track if they know their parents are paying some for their education.
