Me too! Have a 9 month old and need to lose around 40. Also breastfeeding and already having issues with dwindling supply so cutting calories freaks me out, and working out doesn't produce results like cutting calories does for me. So I'm basically counting down the days til I'm done breastfeeding (around a year old). |
Are you exclusively BFing? That will make weight loss more challenging. My success came at the point my DC was mostly on solids. I think anything based on fasting or drastically cutting calories will be very frustrating for you and likely doomed to failure. I would also encourage you to think longer term than "right now". For most people, especially women (and probably double especially BFing women), weight loss is a process of months or years, not weeks. Here are some things that helped me lose about 35lbs in 6mo. Log every bit / sip that goes into your mouth Measure / weigh everything until you know what a portion size looks like Cut all caloric beverages and diet beverages (also helps the wallet) Dropped most sweets except for special occasions but kept a couple of things that could sate a sweets urge .. hot chocolate being my "go to" Have at least 2 servings of fruit and/or veges with every meal (I would challenge myself to finish a salad mix clam shell container every week on my own) Cut back portions and frequency of carbs (bread, rice, bfast cereal, ...) Switch most proteins to lean Since sweets actually make me feel bad, it also helped me to visualize that feeling when I had a sweets craving. You will need to keep fats in your diet. They will help with satiety and they're important for BFing. If you find you're so hungry you go on food binges, you need to add more food. While you're BFing, your body is programmed to maintain weight. Keep a constant stock of fruit & vege and easy to grab protein (hard boiled eggs, string cheese, ...). If you have to have something, drink a glass of water, get a fruit/veg and/or protein, then wait 15 minutes. |

1) Always start with a physical from your internist to make sure you have no underlying health problems. Your doctor may recommend a prehypertension/low salt diet or a prediabetes diet.
2) PP from page 1 is right: walking is great exercise and a great place to begin. 3) BMI/BMR are great guides and benchmarks. 4) You can't go wrong if you practice portion control and cut your salt, fat and sugar intake . |

This is 16:17 -- I should add that I did not change my physical activity level very much until I was down ~30lbs. I would on walks with DC either in a stroller or on my back but I never hit the gym or did structured exercise until my weight loss slowed.
I will also add that I lost ~20lbs (never weighed myself) that I gained after leaving college by simply cutting out caloric beverages. If you did just one thing, I would say cut caloric beverages. |
I am a big fan of beach body DVDs, especially the Shaun T ones like Insanity, Insanity Max 30 and T25. I have bought them off of craigslist and eBay for a fraction of the cost. As long as you have a DVD or blue ray player, you're good to go. They require no equipment. I have a portable DVD player and even take them on vacation if there isn't a gym. The beach body on demand sounds cool, but I got the DVDs for $35 on eBay. As for your diet, I highly recommend myfitnesspal app. The free one is great. Be honest about what you're eating, you may be surprised what has the most calories. I cut out processed sugar, white flour, dairy and most alcohol. Sure if I am at a party I will eat what I want, but on a daily life style basis, I follow those rules. I lost 20 pounds this summer and have been so far easily able to maintain it. |
OP there is no quick fix to permanent and healthy weightloss. Like you said, cut out the sugar. And you don't need an expensive trainer or gym. Walking is a great workout so long as you mix it up with hills and walk at a good clip. Also Get on Youtube and search for at home workout routines where you use just your own body weight as resistance. And put your workout on your daily calendar just like you would a doctor's appointment. Do not weigh yourself every day. Cut out alcohol. Eat small portions throughout the day, and include healthy fats...none of that fat-free crap. You must eat fat to lose weight. Eat slowly, enjoy your food and stop eating when you're full. If you do what I suggested, you should lose 20lbs in about 8 weeks. |
Agree with everything you say except for the part about walking being a great workout. It's not even a workout. A workout involves getting your heart rate up or lifting heavy. If you don't want to lift, run! And run sprints! |

6 years ago I lost 73 lbs---it's been 6 years and I have kept it off.
The most important thing I did was to measure/weigh the food I ate and record it in some type of online calorie counter/journal (I used sparkpeople.com) EVERYTHING. If I put cream in my coffee, I used measuring spoons. If I ate an apple, I weighed it first. Most people take in WAY too many calories, and don't even realize it. |
|
This has nothing to do with sports or fitness..
OP, most people who post on these boards have eating disorders. Tread carefully. |
|
I suggest the Hcg diet. Everyone who tries it loses weight and most keep it off.
People who have NOT TRIED it will bash it. |
OP here. I'd be willing to get into some sort of email accountability with you ladies! I set up a DCUM email: teacherturnedmom616@gmail.com. I know it's strange to "meet online" and I promise I'm not a weirdo, but I'd love to have someone to commiserate with, and cheer on! Please email me, or comment back on here and we can maybe work something out...?

| If you cut your calories, you will decrease your milk supply. If I were you, I would make some changes for health reasons such as more fruits and veggies, less dessert, and more walking and concentrate on real weight loss after you wean. Think about how long it took to put the weight on. Don't try to lose the weight rapidly at this stage in your life. I know it sucks to be overweight, but take your time. |
Thank you! I know...he's only 6 months and ideally I'll be nursing for another 6. I'd really like to lose maybe just 20 pounds, in a healthy and quick way! |
But OP, most of the time the quick way isn't the healthy way, I am not us what your definition of quick is. IMO losing 1-2 pounds a week healthy, so for 20 pounds that is 10-20 weeks. I couldn't lose any weight until I weaned and my cycle returned, it sucked, so I've been there, twice. |
And you know this how? |
