Vent: Annoyed that Grandmother's House = too much TV

Not dictating. Just letting you know why we hate going to your house.

Are you that intolerant that you can't suck it up for a few hours? Some folks enjoy a lively get-together; others a more bookstore/cafe experience. Enjoy them each for what they are and then go back home to what you personally enjoy.

Living their lives is one thing, but OP's post was about family visiting. For many people, TV interferes with connecting with loved ones--and having a TV on all the time can seem like an attempt to avoid making those connections.

While people accustomed to having TV on in the background may feel that they multitask very well, that claim probably isn't a valid one, given actual scientific research on the effect of TV on people. Those without TV on all the time may be able to see this better.

Huh? This makes zero sense and reeks of someone who doesn't have a TV at home (and thinks that those who do are stunted in some way). Many people connect over TV shows, movies, etc.

I also don't agree w the pp who states that a person can only do one thing at a time. That is scary and is not realistic life. I work in health care and I wouldn't have a job if I could only do one thing at a time. I also believe that is part of how kids learn to filter. If having a tv on a background is 'too sensory' for them then they'll have a long road ahead.

So you're well aware then of the literature surrounding interruptions/multitasking and medical error?

What the heck are you talking about??? We're not performing surgery. We're catching up with relatives. If you can't focus on a conversation because there is a little background noise, then maybe you're the issue.

Yes, if you have the TV on when I am over there, then I am thinking, "Why'd you invite anyone over in the first place? You could have just watched TV by yourself if that is so important to you!"

But more to the point, this thread was originally when you go to grandma's house, or another relative's house, so, presumably, you are visiting there for a couple of days, when the annoyance for this type of thing is more cumulative, and builds up over a couple of days. Not just a few hours. Yeah, I can handle it for a few hours, but hopefully, you are aiming for a higher experience for your guests than just asking they barely tolerate your hospitality, and get through it by biting their tongue! I do do that, but then I go home afterwards and think, "Whew! Why didn't they just turn off the tube!??!?!?" and post about it here on DCUM. And prob. think once or twice before another invitation if we don't see eye to eye on something which you apparently think is pretty important!

Stay your ass home next time. You seriously complaing about how somebody else runs their damn house? Maybe they didn't want to have to talk to your ass.
And DCUM says in unison...

TV lovers have such a way with words, don't they?

I don't think it's that weird to have the TV on when it's just close family hanging out and visiting.

It would be weird if it were casual friends or co-workers.

This whole "I'm so enlightened because I don't watch TV" is so damn laughable and pathetic.

There's a reason why you are often the guest and not the host. Your guests secretly think your parties are dull as hell. I hope you at least offer wine to dull the pain.

Leave early or don't go. How hard is that? Sheesh!

Obviously, TV is extremely important to you. Extremely.

Not at all. That's what you anti-TV folks don't get. It's not a big deal, either way. You folks are the ones who make it a big deal, carefully rationing out your 2-3 budgeted hours a week.

Just responding to Health-Care-Worker's claims about the values of multitasking--and training kids for the future by teaching them to filter. Next time I hear of a medical error, I'll know that the problem was not enough TV in the life of the medical staff!

Oh well. Different strokes for different folks! I'll continue to be silently irked by the loud TV at your house, I guess, and you'll continue to think my house is a boring tomb. C'est la vie!
