Vent: Annoyed that Grandmother's House = too much TV

Strangely enough, the younger kids usually don't watch TV during these gatherings. They either play with toys, hang out and/or play video games.

OMG, so depressing.

This whole "I'm so enlightened because I don't watch TV" is so damn laughable and pathetic.

There's a reason why you are often the guest and not the host. Your guests secretly think your parties are dull as hell. I hope you at least offer wine to dull the pain.

If you need TV to liven up your gatherings then you are dumb and boring as a bag of bricks.

Then you'll have something to bitch about on here.

Trashy and sad.

I'm surprised that in, what 11 pages, it hasn't been clearly addressed that this is a class issue. Having the TV on at all times or as "background noise" is very much a lower class thing. The more educated you are the less TV you will watch. Given that DCUM seems obsessed with what is classy and what is not, it staggers my mind that TV on all the time isn't the first thing mentioned. It's an activity that is extremely common among blue collar and uneducated people. Frankly I'm surprised that so many people here say they do it given the usual demographics of DCUM.

Tell that to my graduate-degree-holding FIL and my working-on-her-PhD MIL. The TV is on all the time at their house. My dad, on the other hand, who only graduated from high school, never has the TV on unless he's watching something. It's not only a lower-class thing--I know plenty of educated people who have the TV on all the time and watch the trashiest reality shows.

Despite their graduate degrees then they are still of a lower class mindset.

Nice of you to take a break from Keeping Up With The Kardashians to share your opinion.
