Well if she was there she didn’t ask a question. It was mostly pissed off White Oaks parents and Sangster parents who really dislike LBSS. One said LBSS middle schoolers get accosted on buses by HS students and are sexually harassed. It was wild.

It was not wild at all It was parents from many different schools voicing concerns for their children’s future. All done respectfully and with very good questions. I hope Reid heard the concerns - especially the questions about data and projected numbers and will take it to heart. I honestly felt more heard in that meeting than I have with SA and other members in previous conversations. But maybe Reid is just a better politician and better at making people feel like their comments are making an impact.

The wild reference wasn’t the whole night, that poster was referring to the negative comments about Lake Braddock….with the Lake Braddock principal there. That part was indeed wild and also awkward.

I’m the PP and yes, that’s what I meant. Sangster parents apparently believe LBSS is a crime-ridden dump where predatory seniors hit on 12 year old girls on the bus and in the halls and kids get hung on lockers and bullied. Sangster parents made it clear last night LBSS is really terrible. I guess it’s reputation as a good school is false.

My big take away is that Sangster and White Oak changes to close those split feeders and the attendance island will get reversed now. They’ll focus on areas that haven’t complained like Daventry and West Soringfield and reopen the changes they reversed from Scenario 3. Someone has to move and now it’s clear Sangster kids avoiding LBSS is the priority because the school is terrible and it’s 2 miles further away than WSHS. Most likely it means hundreds of kids will get moved to Lewis and South County.

West Soringfield neighborhoods are going to go to war with each other. I hope Racha and Sandy are pleased at what they’ve accomplished.

It wasn’t that dramatic I would say. A couple of people did mention that they have strong feelings about secondary schools in general. I think most people agree that LB is a great school. No one else said anything bad about it.

I spent 2+ hours listening to people complain about having to move to LBSS because it’s not part of their community (even though the rest of Sangster goes there) and how far away it is and how people want their babies to be babies and not surrounded by upper classmen. It sounds terrible. I’ve only been there for games and it looked okay to me but it sounds really bad with a lot of bullying and abuse towards 7th and 8th graders.

Honestly, that was one comment made by one parent and the entire rest of room thought it was cringe. The rest of the comments were thoughtful and reasonable. I was impressed by how White Oaks, Sangster, and HV parents all spoke with decorum. I also appreciated Dr. Reid staying far past ending time to finish questions. Tonight made me proud for the whole West Springfield community.

I wasn't bothered by that comment and my kid goes to LB. There are also LB kids who don't want to go to Irving because of Irving's reputation. All schools have good and bad. It's valid for someone not to want their 7th grader on the bus with 12th graders even if it's not everyone's priority.

I also thought Reid's response should have been thanks for your feedback and not basically gaslighting the commenter by trying to emotionally appeal to people and protect the principal's feelings. The principal doesn't know everything that goes on and Reid especially doesn't.

Irving kids are sexually active, experimenting with drugs and vapes, bullying kids, running amuk at the shopping center, and watching porn and violence on their phones too, just like the LBSS kids.

Hoing to a middle school vs a secondary school does not mean that the secondary kids have access to smart phones via the high school kids and the midfle school kids are tech free.

The high school boys at the secondary schools are NOT hitying on the 12 year old girls on the busses. These boys have grown up in the me too era with lots of training on how not to make girls uncomfortable. They are barely hitting in their high school classmates and wouldn't touch middle school girls with a 20 foot pole. Heck, they will rarely date girls 2 or 2 grades younger than them. This is not your 80s teen boys.

That parent's comments sounded as if tgey were a parent of very young children who did not have much experience with teenagers and middle school kids. It was well intended, but based on stereotypes a kindergarten parent would have about teenagers.

You're complaining about stereotypes when your last 2 paragraphs are full of them.

I didn't say Irving doesn't have issues. My child knows students there who have mentioned concerning issues. Same as LBSS. However, it's a fact that if you're riding a bus with only 7th and 8th graders you can't get hit on or bullied by high schoolers. That mom is allowed to want to protect her kid from that.

My LBSS MS student hangs out with high schoolers from their bus after school. In fact they don't walk around with any middle schoolers. Their 7th and 8th grade friends are on different buses and don't know high schoolers personally. The high schoolers comment on my kid's maturity compared to other middle schoolers. That's both a good and bad thing and not everyone's cup of tea. It doesn't mean you can pretend it away.

These aren't my stereotypes.

I am just restating that parent's stereotypes about issues she said are solely Lake Braddock issues due to the Lake Braddock high school kids.

Every school containing teenagers contains these issues, including Irving.

Lake Braddock is not some cesspool of teenage debauchery that is caused by the unique corrupting influence of the Lake Braddock high school students.

Where there are teenagers, there are kids with bad behavior who make bad choices..

Almost the entire Fairfax community wants to stay where they are. Shame on the school board for engaging in this comprehensive review (with absurd five year cycles) rather than addressing the actually urgent needs (only Coates at the moment).

The comprehensive review was a good thing. If they end up making almost no changes, that is also fine.

The comprehensive review was a waste of a half million dollars. Likely 1 million wasted when you factor in all the over time for the dozens of FCPS employees and security staffing all these meetings.

This! I'm a democrat...and not even a conservative democrat, but a super liberal democrat. I can't believe what a waste of money this board spent on this clown show of a consulting firm. Before this process I would have never considered questioning my vote on things like school bonds. I would have 'likely' not questioned the intentions or competency for the board members I voted for...but after this whole mess. Don't get me wrong, I'm not switching sides...but I'm sure as heck paying a million times more attention in the next school board election cycle.

Timeline says that BRAC reviews data starting 11/12 and new draft is submitted to Reid by 11/24, so my gut says the public won’t see anything until after 12/1.

Listening to the meeting last night, clearly something else needs to be done. But I'm sure the school board/Reid are not bold enough to do it and will cave to parents. Parents raised concerns over crowding at WSHS, and also that moving students from WSHS to LB will cause over-crowding issues in the next few years. Why is the only solution for WSHS over-crowding is to move them to LB?

Lewis borders WSHS and is severely under-enrolled. The change that needs to happen is that WSHS students need to be moved to Lewis, not to LB. But hearing parents raise concerns about moving from WSHS to LB, I'm sure the board is too scared to propose this change. I've lost faith in this entire process.

Neither WO or Sangster parents threw any other neighborhoods under the bus with suggesting they “pick them” instead. I heard overwhelmingly that they consider slowing these decisions down and reexamine data. Perhaps voting on a partial county boundary change to allow more time with accurate data be examined in this area.

Someone is moving. Reid made that very clear. And if it’s not the Sangster split feeder and White Oaks attendance island then it will be West Springfield ES neighborhoods like Daventry, who will get returned to Lewis. Or sending Hunt Valley to Saratoga/Lewis or South County. Or maybe sending more of Orange Hunt to Sangster. Families are getting moved. It’s just a question of which ones.

I think this comment is to stoke the fires and spread more fear. It sounded like the community worked together last night to force more questions on data. I also hope it made Dr.Reid and the board to acknowledge how challenging this process has been for every member of the community.

Sandy Anderson has made it very clear the status quo won’t work. Current WSHS parents complain about overcrowding. SB and FCPS staff don’t care how challenging the process has been. Do you talk to any of them last night after the meeting? They are moving ahead with this. Someone is moving. The question is which neighborhood(s).

Why can't they pursue looking at detailed demographic projections at a more granular level, not moving anyone from another pyramid in, doing boundary checks, truly closing to transfers, moving German, etc.? We're not at WSHS, but all of those things should be common sense. Why is it not "first do no harm" instead of "spread the harm around to as many as possible for poorly thought-out reasons"?

Of course people will be upset about any redistricting that affects them, but it would be MUCH less upsetting if they made a more compelling case that accounts for reality.

To be fair, the vocal people are the ones getting moved or in danger of getting moved that want to stay at the school. There are also LOTS of people who want relief from overcrowding at WS. In fact, one of the first questions was about only reducing WSHS from 112% capacity to 106% capacity and why they weren't able to get it down lower in scenario 4.

They could have gotten it down lower in scenario 4 if they had moved most of HV south of the Parkway to South County like they originally wanted. But then you had HV lobbying to stay at WS, which was granted, so now WSHS stays overcrowded. You can’t have it all - either everyone or most people stay at WS and it stays at 110%+ with trailers in essentially a brand new building, and the level of crowding will last until the large class of current 7th graders graduates. Or areas move out to address the crowding, but the people getting moved out end up at a smaller and more mixed income MS/HS (South County) or at the dreaded 7-12 secondary school (Lake Braddock) which they don’t want, so they lobby to stay.

Sangster and the Keene Mill island were always slated to go to Lake Braddock because that is the most obvious solution for WSHS.

This was not a bait and switch situation

It's definitely bait and switch to move white oaks kids to cherry run.

That part is a new switch.

Yes, I agree with you, and it's probably not resolvable with only the low hanging fruit, but it surprised me to hear how much low hanging fruit apparently hasn't been considered.

The Keene Mill Island and Sangster are the low hanging fruit.

Why not close the Afton Glenn Island as low hanging fruit?

Afton Glen is not zoned to WSHS.

Generalization at best. A given parent isn't worried about what happens statistically. She doesn't want the possibility her kid can be hit on by a high schooler on the bus. Your generalizations doesn't protect her kid from that. Having a bus with only 7th and 8th graders does.

A man with a house on the dividing line made it clear - his neighborhood is walkable for students to visit friends etc but moving him to LBSS makes most of his school. community across the parkway and Lee chapel, eliminating the community aspect. white oaks parents explained that their neighborhood is governed by 3 HOAS that would be split in strange ways, again eliminating the neighborhood community when the students go to different schools.

When these parents talk about community, it’s not the school it’s where their physical house is and the community they see daily, carpool with, walk to friends houses etc. but moving these schools they would no longer be part of that because the natural boundaries are the parkway - and kids aren’t crossing that alone to go play w a friend

+ 1

Community is walkable. Community is heading to the pools and seeing a friend. Community is meeting a friend and safely biking without crossing main roads.

And that entire communuty would get rezoned to Lake Braddock.

No… it wouldn’t. There would be exactly one neighborhood off of huntsman going to LBSS. The others stay WSHS.

It's also fun how they are trying to push responsibility to BRAC. With all due respect and admiration for the amount of effort that they put in, it's unfair to hold them accountable to this extent. FCPS is paying consultants, people who are supposed to have expertise and experience!

Did she mean specifically for the WSHS stuff you all are talking about, or in general? Could you tell based on wording? Just wondering because a change affecting my kids was in map 3 but went away in map 4.

FCPS is paying consultants, people who are supposed to have expertise and experience!

Why don't the BRAC members openly pushback at these meetings when Thru and Dr. Reid openly discuss that they are decision makers? There were several BRAC members at last night's meeting (and I'm sure they are at all the other meeting as well).
