As a former Bullis parent whose son was valued athletically, I can guarantee money is given our based on need. These idiots parents who say that Bullis gives out 30 free rides for athletes need their heads examined.

Who cares if Bullis uses money to attract athletes? They would not do it if they did not think there was a benefit to the entire school. If you have seen the campus lately, new field, new academic building, the school seems to have received an excellent return on its investment.

Do these Bullis athletes have certain grades and SSAT scores they must obtain in order to get it? I thought Bullis was a good school with high standards? No? What is the profile of their average HS admit? Is it up there with Sidwell, GDS, Landon, Etc. What sports do they recruit for?

So it seems to me that students are looking for a better opportunity academically and athletically. Also if this brings diversity to a school it seems that everyone wins. Those that have been critical of Bullis offering opportunity and diversity may be be just looking for an opportunity to put another school down for no real reason.

Is this unreasonable?

No. the only people complaining are the parents at other IAC schools who are getting pummeled and embarrassed at football and lacrosse games. Oh, one other group complainfin consists of Bullis parents whose sons get benched after the recruits in football and lax come in by junior year.

Prep parents are grumping because the school is crushed from the debt they took on for paying for that infrastructure, and the best athletes from Mater Dei have been consistently going to Gonzaga over Prep for about 4 years now.

They have been displaced by Bullis and SSSAS for lax, and it kills them.

Bullis doesn't have the same minimum standards for admittance of any of the good private schools. Bullis' are much lower They truly take kids who cannot get in to any other school as well as kids who are kicked out/counseled out of the other DC area privates. And it doesn't just minimize expectations for athletes. Its just not an academically competitive school.

No, they are not in the same "league" academically as Sidwell, Landon or GDS (or any other well regarded DC area private school). Not even close. Academically, and as far as admittance rates, Bullis is more akin to Flint Hill or St Andrews. I have no idea how you could have develop this total misperception of Bullis.

Thank you PP above. I am new to this private school thing but my DS runs track and it seems to be the " in" school. He wants to go but we would not consider any private unless it was very discounted. I just didn't know if academically it compared to the well known schools like Landon, etc. He is a B student at a good public school but honestly don't think Landon, STA, etc material. He is in 7th grade so we have a whole year to explore. Several of his track friends go or are considering Bullis, so I was curious.

And honestly I never heard of it had it not been for his sports friends. I've heard of St Albans, Landon, etc. and really wanted to know if it was as good academically. I can't seeing paying for a school that isn't also top notch academically. It would be a struggle. He just keeps talking about it and I've been in the area my whole life and never heard of it, so wanted to see why all the hype.

Why are track athletes on the lacrosse thread? odd?

Don't listen to all the negativity here, take your DS to visit Bullis and shadow. Each kid is different and it may be a good fit. Plus most privates have a wide range of abilities in their students. Check out some others as well. Apply and see what kind of aid you get. If he's a B student, you probably don't need him stressed out at a school that is all about academics like GDS, St. Alban's etc even if they were interested in his track and field abilities.
