Agree, but either parent home is fine. Or at least one parent part time or very flexible and available. Teens benefit greatly from having a parent home, available physically and emotionally, and keeping an eye on what is going on in their life. A parent that is home is more likely to pick up on subtle changes that may need closer monitoring

Both of my DH’s nephews border on this kind of mess.

The mom allowing the father to be abusive contributed, as did allowing the boys to smoke marijuana in the house everyday. Also, they weren’t required to get a job after high school graduation and lo and behold, 10 years later, neither had a job, neither had attended college, and they kept their mom up half the night yelling at the screen as they played video games all night while hitting the bong.

I didn't do any of that and all three of my boys went to public schools. One MD, one CPA and one currently at Georgetown Law. All great ambitious young men.
