I'm the poster who asked that question above. Honestly, when you meet some of these guys in real life at events and things, it's pretty obvious that they were bullied throughout their childhood and are still very angry about that. I'm glad they've taken the long view and channeled their anger into successful careers instead of shooting up their high schools, but their motivations are so obvious that you can't feel anything but sorry for them. I'm glad the schools do so much with anti-bullying these days, because no one should have to live their life like that. I really hope the success of these guys' children in their schools and their lax clubs helps them finally find some peace. |
| Oh and thanks to the posters who responded positively to my question and others on this thread. It's been very helpful. |
It's not, especially Montgomery Public School lacrosse which is terrible outside of Churchill. Virginia public school lacrosse is better, but it is also so inferior to private school lacrosse. |
So it sounds like you almost need to go the private school route if you want your kid to have a chance to play at the highest levels? That's kind of a terrible set-up. |
Don't let all the noise fool anyone. In order for your kid to play at the highest levels they need to be very, very good. That's it. You want them to play the best competition in the DMV? They need to play for a private school. But, if you're kid is very, very good, they will get noticed and they will get a chance to play at higher levels, irrespective of whether they play public or private. (Assuming they have good work ethic, good grades, etc.) And, by "very, very good", I mean how D1 (or high D3) coaches think of the kid; not how mom & dad think of the kid. |
Not at all. Playing for the club and how you do at events is much more important generally speaking than the HS. Except for certain top lax HS, the HS coach makes no impact to the recruiter. |
+1 The Dad's (and a few of the Mom's) are just unbearable to be around. Most times I end up sitting away from everyone just to try and enjoy the games. |
No. But it helps. Look, there are thousands of kids who play lacrosse. Thousands of kids who want to get recruited. If you are a college coach, how do you winnow the list to a manageable number of kids to take a close look at? Playing for a respected club helps. Playing for a respected high school (think Landon, McDonough, etc.) reinforces that. Sure, they do look at kids who don't come from high profile clubs or programs. But with a good club and good high school behind you, there is much less of a look that needs to take place to ensure you know what you are getting. |

Come on - asking if Sweetlax was a league was pretty dumb. In fact, it shows a complete ignorance of the sport and this thread. To anyone with even a modicum of knowledge of either - the sport or this thread (and the reference to an article listing high school players) - it would be quite obvious that its an elite club team.
And the response was hardly vulgar. Brusque but nothing more. |
| I am sorry for the confusion. What I meant was, did they play with Sweetlax in a summer league. And yes, I am ignorant but I'm trying to learn. My older son plays at a very high level in his sport and will play in college, and I was ignorant about that sport before we started all this, but I had other parents help me along the way, and I enjoy helping the up-and-coming parents as well. I really think you'll feel better about yourself if you try to be kind. |
Just shut up and go away. |
| How is SJ looking for next year? Any good freshmen or transfers? |
|
SJC had strong FOGO and stud goalie last Spring and some very strong senior defenders.
They will fall off a bit this year however the future of the program looks bright with their new coach. |
Summer leagues are for fun only and usually only attract less competitive kids if they even exists (here there is Triple Edge). In the summer the best middle and high school players go with their club teams to tournaments around the country. These tournaments vary in quality/competition with the best often being invitation-only. Club teams are year-round, not for the summer only although if you say for a national select team, they usually are just for the summer, or even just for one tournament This applies for girls and boys. |
