One of the detained swimmers is from Rockville. Family and friends would probably like this all to go away quickly and quietly. |
Not defending Lochte. Who knows what the hell he was doing? But, if I were the two detained swimmers, I would tell Brazil whatever it wanted to hear so I could go home. Even if Lochte made up the whole thing (there was no gun and no money taken), Brazil comes off so poorly in this whole affair. We are talking about some dumb fucking jocks who never even tried to pursue charges; there was no need to turn it into a major international incident like this. |
The hell? They basically slagged off the entire country during the Olympics with their ridiculous story. And Brazil is the one who comes off poorly? |
Pulling them off the plane, taking their passports, because others told a story? Yes, Rio comes off as a very scary place to visit. |
Yep. They way overreacted to a single robbery story. Detaining dumb jocks who make up stories and legally preventing them from returning to their home country is not going to go over as the big PR victory Brazil seems to think it will. It will make tourists think twice about visiting. And it will fail at keeping the global populace in the dark about the basic fact that there is an abundance of robberies and other crime in Brazil. One wonders if Brazil spent comparable resources investigating robberies where charges were actually pursued whether the crime rate would actually be lower than where it is currently. |
| Two things are clear: 1. Ryan Lochte is a jackass, and 2. Mario Andrada has a future in diplomacy. |
| The video from the gas station seems to show them being held at gunpoint. |
| It seems the "robbery" was fabricated. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/2016-rio-summer-olympics/u-s-olympic-swimmers-weren-t-robbed-fabricated-story-report-n633636 |
Agreed. Lochte and pals come off as douchebag American jocks who think they can do what they want in other countries and get away with it. We have enough of a reputation of that as a country politically speaking, and an occasion where countries are supposed to represent some of their their best representatives, this looks terrible for Americans, and how Americans are perceived overall, but especially as travelers/tourists. |
I wonder what they'll say once they are back on US soil. I would be saying whatever I had to to leave. I mean, if I was literally pulled off a plane and my passport taken I would say anything to get home. These men have NO rights there. |
| Are there laws about just peeing in the bushes? Maybe someone had to poop? If the bathroom is locked why not go to ask for the key? I'm thinking maybe someone got a blowjob in the bathroom and didn't pay for it? |
Lochte and his buddies may all be huge assholes. That's quite possible. But it still doesn't justify what Brazil did. |
Pshaw. The Rio police say it didn't happen. |
| Olympics should be held in safe zones... maybe a permanent location. The Third World was not ready. |
I don't think brazil needed any help form Lochte to make the country look bad. A country like that has no business hosting the olympics when it can't even feed it's own people....can't wait for those stadiums to become parking lots in 4 months. |
