Slightly separate topic, if Ca has such high winds frequently, why don’t they put up some wind mills in these canyons to capture that energy. I thought they were trying to be green ?

Trump was telling the truth, we had an entire House panel about this with the FEMA head having to come in to address it. Are you suggesting this is ok? As for funding, it was Mayorkas who said that funds wouldn’t last the hurricane season, a statement he later tried to backtrack. His comments sparked a furor, don’t blame Trump for discussing his comments.

Santa Ana , Diablo and Sundown winds occur only at seasonal times. If they occurred all the time LA, Oakland and Santa Barbara wouldn’t exist.

They aren’t a year round occurrence. There are wind farms out near Livermore and Stockton. They are on flatter rolling hillsides not canyons. I also don’t think you can have a line of windmills in a canyon as it’s too steep.

My political point is to say that this conversation is an example of how the lack of compassion for those different from you has poisoned our nation's culture. Also, it is helpful to look at how our former political mores are being violated by the day and we don't even notice. If having that conversation (which, by the way is being had in mainstream opinion pages) is uninteresting to you then maybe you should stick to talking to people who think like you. It's difficult to take you seriously when mainstream conservative political thought sees fit to advance comepletely bullshit theories about this.

It’s ridiculous to take you seriously when you are more interested in pointing fingers at republicans who literally have no influence in the state rather than finding out why the palisades reservoir was empty, why firefighters are saying they have no water in their hoses, why LA’s firefighter budget was slashed by $18 million, why insurance companies were prevented from projecting future losses in their premium calculations, why California had insurance companies walking away from the state altogether (they obviously understood the risk!), why Newsom cut the wildfire budget by $101 million, and on and on. Of course Americans are sympathetic to the loss of homes and life! But we need to stop these boneheaded actions because California will always have fires due to its topography and landscape.

the 24-25 budget. Personnel actually increased by approximately 6000 in the same period. Insurance companies were prevented from projecting future losses because no one would be able to buy insurance otherwise (see Florida).

The $101 million cut is detailed in multiple newspapers. The fact is true.

No one was able to get insurance … when those people insurance companies then left the state! And read the lead article in the WSJ - the companies that remained in CA had people dropping coverage because they couldn’t afford the premiums even WITh that capped risk evaluation. I can’t believe you are seriously suggesting that government should mandate inaccurate risk assessment for insurance companies in order to keep them in California. It didn’t work before the fires and it won’t work in the future.

These are copycat arsonists. A weird phenomenon where wildfires can trigger arsonists to start setting fires. There have been reports of several smaller fires around the area being arsonists. The majority of wildfires aren’t arson. The majority are from equipment like cars, trucks, heavy lawn equipment followed by power lines. There certainly are instances of arson by stupidity or malice. The fires last year involved a guy catching his car on fire and pushing it over the edge. In Arizona there was a wildfire from fire workers at a gender reveal party.

Climate change makes a fire capable of growing and spreading to extreme levels.

I really don’t think so. Ca has a lot of building regulations and red tape. Finding a contractor to rebuild your house will take a long time - too much demand.

The reservoirs did not run dry. The problem was engineering in the infrastructure to draw water faster enough into local storage and the infrastructure to draw water from local storage to the hydrants. You can’t fight wildfires in 100 mph winds and even if you could pump water up a canyon 10x faster, you still won’t stop it.

What is truly evil is why the right wing decided to come up with a completely unbelievable lie and send their bot army out to spread it.

I just checked, Ca gets its power from the following: Nat gas (45%), solar (24%), wind (7%), hydro (14%), nuclear (2.7), one coal plant in San Bernardino, and other.

They need to cut that nat gas percentage, if they are going to scream climate change every time this happens. They look like hypocrites.

My extended family has remodeled and built a lot of houses in Northern California and the Bay Area. The regulations are pretty straightforward. Stuff gets delayed from demand for architects, contractors, and supply problems. There is a lot of money in CA and the people with money do not understand construction which means it’s a gold mine for unscrupulous contractors and builders. The permits get mucked up when people try to build something too big, on geologically unstable ground, try to flip a 100 year house but not address the foundation, not secure houses on a hillside, or knowingly try to skirt basic codes hoping the inspector won’t notice and the home owner won’t find out for awhile.
