Serious question, how many inmates are you willing to house and feed? The average cost per inmate is $130,000 per year.

Jail is what progressives thinks is lodging and meals? If that's what they aspire to, they are not worth the time to rehabilitate and should be behind bars for life. What else have they got to do with their time? Personally, I'd like to save some of the per head costs to add to police dept budgets. Where I live, inmates work. They pick up trash along the road, work in county facilities making repairs, painting, cooking for our Meals on Wheels program, and doing a lot of other low skill jobs. Not only does it make their time behind bars productive, but it also provides them with some small bit of training so when they get out, they have a least a few menial skills.
If you don't like the idea of working for the county when you are incarcerated, don't commit crimes.

Why feed and house inmates at $130K? That's a waste of money and resources. Build a mega prison with cheap overhead and throw them in there. There's no reason to spend any money on these folks when there's no return on investment. And we can stop death penalty appeals. That is a time suck.

WE also need to trim the cost of keeping each prisoner. $130K is ridiculous and far more than what that criminal would be making/spending out of prison so why do they get a 6 figure salary in prison? Trim the excess and make larger mega prisons to cut the overhead per person. IN all, paying $130K per person is definitely worth the cost considering the damage done by each prisoner on the outside. I'd pay $130K to minimize murder and rapes in our communities.

Where I live, inmates work. They pick up trash along the road, work in county facilities making repairs, painting, cooking for our Meals on Wheels program, and doing a lot of other low skill jobs. Not only does it make their time behind bars productive, but it also provides them with some small bit of training so when they get out, they have a least a few menial skills.
If you don't like the idea of working for the county when you are incarcerated, don't commit crimes.

You seem to be on some personal tirade but we are discussing Philadelphia here.

The trend is that blue cities like Philly, Portland, DC have, mainly as a response to George Floyd in 2020, have implemented progressive criminal justice policies which are tantamount to leniency. These looters will have a no bail policy for example. Or they will have a progressive judge intent on not prosecuting.

Basically, to anyone paying attention crime is rising, but as a direct result of criminals knowing that they get a free pass under these new policies, there are no serious punishments anymore.

Portland went mad in the pandemic but Philadelphia and San Francisco changed pre-pandemic and are worse now. We lived in Center City Phila for many years and that area was great around Rittenhouse Square. Philly and DC comparable areas? now several who downsized - condos, apt- now moving out. Some long term residents are moving out . DC has had a rather rapid decline compared to Philly and SF - Conn Ave, Foggy Bottom, Cathedral Heights.

Japanese here. You know we're famous for being a safe country. There is very little violent crime compared to western countries.

You know why? Because people are severely punished for infractions, and prisons are not made pleasant for prisoners.
