We are going to look like fools DL while the rest of the country opens up

We are also a nation that force people to go to work while other nations pay their people to stay home without the need to fire them.

Oh, did that scary mask threaten your self entitlement?

Then how come every other country can open up, close a few schools temporarily and keep going on and open?

How can daycares, camps, pools, etc... stay open right now? No issues.

Because you know kids are not that symptomatic, they don’t spread it much at all, masks work, and so does social distancing.

I believe OP. I think come November we are going to look like fools. We can’t sit home scared to death. There is an easy way to prevent this from spreading. Normal same people know this. Teachers are essential. Kids were in school for a month while this disease spread. No issue.

Because other countries has a national response to the pandemic and the US did not. We allowed the 50+ states and territories to have a mishmash of policies that did not coordinate at all. So we had states that opened up adjacent to states that were locked down. We had states with strict health restrictions like masks and social distancing next to states that had lax regulations. We had states that allowed a wide range of businesses and attractions to open, including bars, gyms, beaches, next to states that had very few businesses to open. So people from the locked down states just took road trips to the states opening up, then went home and brought the virus home with them to infect the restricted state.

The lack of a national response has been responsible for us not controlling this. The pandemic was always going to hit us as one of the largest countries in the world. But with a national response, we could have contained this much like many other nations in the world did and we could have had a slow and steady decline like the other nations. Instead, the complete irresponsibility of the Trump administration, their disbelief in the seriousness of the virus, their political games about PPE and federal support and their manipulation of the information and data coming out have lead us to where we are; a nation in disarray, with rising rather than declining cases, hospitalization and death rates.

Look at what happens every time something opens without adequate restrictions: beaches are causing surges that threaten to overwhelm the hospital systems, bars are causing hot spots even within certain cities, gyms are causing outbreaks. And you think that schools will be different? I think come October, many of the schools that do open will be closing due to outbreaks. Yes, I agree that the death rate will be lower because children are less susceptible, but I think there will be collateral damage in teachers, school staff, parents, grandparents who will be infected by child transmission.

If only federalism didn’t exist and Trump had dictatorial powers.

Yeah, that’d be great.

It's not dictatorial to declare a national emergency and focus federal resources and unified guidance from health organizations like the CDC in responding to a world-wide health emergency. Every other nation in the world including over 100 other democracies did this and there was no claims of dictatorship.

It's insane that he was willing to declare a national emergency to build a wall that only helped out his wealthy contractor friends, but not for a world-wide health crisis that has already killed over 100K domestic victims.

Add Minneapolis, Chicago suburbs, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia to the ever growing lists of starting the year all virtual. We will not look like fools, OP. It’s happening in many, many places.

The OP is just being a drama queen because they're privileged and feel inconvenienced by the county. They have to realize it was the only sensible choice the county could make. There's just a group of people on this board that enjoy complaining no matter what MCPS does.

Yes, masks work when they are worn continuously, but kids are not going to be good at keeping them on. The younger kids will take them off for many reasons. The tweens and teens will be convinced of the invulnerability as they have been for eternity. They will take them off to eat, to take selfies, to make faces at their friends. They will think that that space where they and their friends are hiding from view is "safe" and will take them off, then some other kids will find that space and walk through.

There is also virtually no way to really maintain social distancing in middle and high school when all students have to change for classes and go in all different directions. You would need to restrict attendance to about 10% in order to keep social distancing in middle and high school for class changes and not have to allocate more than 30 minutes each time students change classes.

As seen on facebook:

And this is a reminder from an acquaintance who is a teacher about how well masks will work:

People in this area are generally better educated (I won't say more intelligent although I believe that to be true) than the rest of the country, so I'm confident we will end up looking better than the parts of the country that re-opened. We're making the smarter choice to continue with DL.

We aren't the east coast, intellectual elite for nothing.

Add Miami and Fort Lauderdale, FL to the list of virtual...and just about all of Metro Atlanta.

Looks like more of the larger metro areas are starting virtually. This didn't age well at all.

And both of these things are why we have to do DL for school.dtbia year.

Leadership does not equal dictatorial powers. Trump could have exerted some leadership -- encouraged people to do the right thing, rather than actively encouraging the opposite. He is a douche bag and a failure.

What school districts are you referring to that are starting in person/as normal in “the rest of the country”? I have friends and relatives all over: primarily the Midwest and the South, also CA, Pacific Northwest, TX, FL. Everyone I know has said their school districts will at least start out as all virtual. I don’t know anyone in the country whose kids will be going back to school as usual.
