Yes, masks work when they are worn continuously, but kids are not going to be good at keeping them on.  The younger kids will take them off for many reasons.  The tweens and teens will be convinced of the invulnerability as they have been for eternity.  They will take them off to eat, to take selfies, to make faces at their friends.  They will think that that space where they and their friends are hiding from view is "safe" and will take them off, then some other kids will find that space and walk through.

There is also virtually no way to really maintain social distancing in middle and high school when all students have to change for classes and go in all different directions.  You would need to restrict attendance to about 10% in order to keep social distancing in middle and high school for class changes and not have to allocate more than 30 minutes each time students change classes.
