| How is 3d 2020? |
You can play in the showcases. And, top high school teams play in the top showcases. My kid goes to one of those school and coach said this and he was a college coach before HS coach. My kid also played for one of the top clubs talked about and I could tell it is nothing but a revenue generator. |
From what I heard from a friend who's son played on the 2020 team, kids are leaving. 3D has a big name nationally, but hasn't taken off here in the Mid Atlantic. He is now shopping around for another club for his son to play on. As for playing club or not and paying the $$$ and determining if it is "worth it" is a family decision. Our son has played for a local club program for several years, as well as individual showcases. With the recent shift in early recruiting the # of coaches prowling the sidelines is considerably down for his class (2020). That being said, there is no comparison to the exposure received at club/showcase events vs. high school games. MIAA, IAC, etc. coaches all have college connections - but logistically, it's impossible for D1 - 3 coaches to watch a high volume of individual high school games. They've got their own season to focus on. Targeting a specific player? Sure. But for sheer exposure, club/showcases will net you 10X the number of eyeballs. Lacrosse is not a money sport. D1 12.6 scholarships; Ivy zero scholarship dollars. We view lacrosse as another lever our son can pull in the admissions process, in hopes of tipping the scales for a potential reach school (e.g. Princeton). It's his passion, so we pave the path. Success is up to his work ethic and commitment. So far it's been working out well for us. Your mileage may vary. |
My son played 3D 2020 and they did well in their tournaments this summer. Is the team perfect no but he enjoyed his time on the team. He did receive feedback from practices and games. One coach was great motivation for my son. Hopefully he will have the same experience this coming season. |
But the first poster is right. You do not need to be in a club to play college showcases. You have been drinking the club coach Kool-aid. As a parent of my third rising high school lacrosse player, I just keep hoping that cooler heads will prevail, because you are all crazy. With all that being said, my kids, per my encouragement--I was a D1 player and hated it, as I never played and I missed out on other things in college for it--chose not to pursue being recruited. But I know plenty of families who have found their club coaches to be utterly useless in the recruiting process, while their high school coaches were their biggest promoters. Just let your kids do what makes them happy. And I promise you, all this tryout crap makes them miserable! |

I saw 3D Mid-Atlantic 2020 play this summer and I would say it's a solid team... We'll find out in the tournaments this fall...

Sidwell sports are in a freefall. all of their best rising 9th graders leave to go to other schools - Bullis, St. Albans, Maret. Their football team may not win a game this year and they will struggle to field a lacrosse team this year. |
Agree that clubs are real money makers for the club owners. To make matters worse, said club owners are for the most part insufferable ass-hats. That being said, if your kid's goal is to be recruited to play college lacrosse, the club team is a necessary evil. |
| Bullis best player last year was recruited to Bullis this off-season. |
|
sorry for the confusion...
I meant to say Sidwells best player last Spring was recruited to Bullis this offseason. |
If you are a top player for an IAC program, you may be in good shape for recruitment regardless of club affiliation. That said, Division 1 lacrosse teams play a LOT of lacrosse. Your kid needs to really love the game and want to play a LOT. If he/she is not begging you to play club because they really want to play, is Division 1 going to be a good fit for them? Maybe, maybe not. For the kids that love the game and want to play, club is a great outlet and a great testing ground, even if there are people setting it up solely for profit. Not saying it is essential, but it is not profit-driven black hole for many who participate. |
They just folded 2-3 teams. That club is about to die. |
| Which 3D teams were folded? |
Please do tell... |
I'm a different poster. I can only add that my son is trying out for VLC 2021 (among others). After last weekend's tryouts, VLC published the names of kids who made the team up to this point. There are still openings which will be filled after the last tryout. I noticed the names of quite a few boys who previously played for 3D on the roster. I figured they were either pilfered, or thinking they were trading up. But maybe just families looking to jump a sinking ship? Would be a shame. 3D is a solid program with nice coaches. |
