I would not give DeSantis credit or blame at this point. He hasn’t done anything yet. It’s all being handled by emergency management pros. Florida has a lot of people who know how to manage hurricane response, relief, and recovery. FEMA pays Florida responders to help other states. They are trained, experienced, and well-equipped. But they aren’t MAGA or DeSantis cronies or pork and patronage a**holes.
The test for DeSantis is when all the federal money rolls in will he put the competent experts in charge and give contracts on merit or will he launder all of it through his crony and donor network the way he has done everything else. I’m guessing he does the latter. He will choose corruption over competence. |

DeSantis is very aware (and has been advised) that his handling of this crisis will likely make or break his chances in November and also his chances in 2024. Everything he does will be with that in mind.
I can't stand him and I think he will be super bad news if he gets elected president, but I do also admit he handled the Surfside condo collapse very well so there's some chance he will handle this well too. I'm actually afraid this is what will get him releected as governor and possibly propel him to the presidency. If that happens the whole country is in for a very rude awakening although those who like Trump will probably love this guy too. |

So s/he can vote in the primary and weed the whackos out. I've considered doing the same. |
Agreed. My MAGA cousin is all over Facebook acting like DeSantis has done such a great job in his response to the hurricane and how he was so prepared. Lady, these processes are long in place well before he ever took office. It's not him. He's just using it as a campaign tool. (She's not a Florida resident and has no ties there. It's a bad sign.) |
So he can't be blamed either? |
There are closed party primaries here. The quality of many of the Florida republicans has fallen off a cliff. I’ll vote to nominate the most sane among them, then vote dem in the general. |
That’s what the post said. He hasn’t done anything yet. |

Of course he’s done plenty. It’s comical how some of you are acting like all of these funds, resources, shelters, National Guard, etc. would have just magically appeared. No. FIVE DAYS before Ian made landfall, DeSantis was in the thick of preparations, declaring a state of emergency in 24 counties (including Lee Co., btw) and making sure all emergency powers were in place. Five days prior. He was urging people to evacuate. There is nothing you can say that negates this. The partisan garbage makes it very clear those of you trying (and failing) to trash him are just not serious people.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 22-218, declaring a State of Emergency for 24 counties in the potential path of Tropical Depression 9. Additionally, Governor DeSantis has requested a federal pre-landfall Emergency Declaration in anticipation of impacts from the storm. This declaration will make available important resources and support, as well as free up funding sources for emergency protective measures. Under this this emergency order, members of the Florida National Guard will be activated and on standby awaiting orders. https://www.flgov.com/2022/09/23/governor-ron-desantis-declares-state-of-emergency-for-24-counties-urges-floridians-to-prepare-for-impacts-from-tropical-depression-9/ |
Of course, if this was a Dem governor, engaging in *exactly* the same preparations as DeSantis, you’d be lauding him. Too funny. DP |
| Well DeSantis thought he was being cute by sending 48 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard to draw attention to border control. And then Mother Nature said, "Hold my beer." Seems like federal aid, competence, and climate change have now taken over the headlines. |
Lol 5 day before he was shipping illegals from Texas and Venezuela to Martha’s Vineyard. Desantis is a total failure as governor killing over a 100 people because of his failure to prepare the people of Florida. |
I think it is amusing that FL now has to IMPORT migrants to help clean up! https://www.thedailybeast.com/irony-meter-explodes-as-migrants-lured-to-florida-for-hurricane-ian-cleanup |
You think DeSantis built the shelters in five days? These shelters were what Republicans call pork. They are high school gyms, community centers, recreation centers, and other event spaces that were funded with up to 75% FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant and Public Assistance Grant funds because they were built to shelter standards to serve as emergency standards. The Disaster Management teams have all been trained and equipped by FEMA. Florida has had a bunch of hurricanes. The Emergency Operations people in the coastal counties know how to do the immediate preparation and response. The longer-term relief and recovery are when the state and federal governments need to function effectively. |
| Wonder what the true number of deaths will be? DeSantis has a history of hiding the death count. |
