When people talk about university responsibilities to students, it’s really about teens and the school acting as parents in absence. This man was 24 years old, old enough to be a full officer in the military directing men to their death. He was on the cusp of being a doctor responsible for peoples lives. The university does not owe him anything more than any other employee, just because he was a “student” is meaningless. |
Even employers know that firing people should be done at certain times. They don’t send you an email at 1130pm laying out the dire consequences. They actually do have a responsibility to him. |
And there’s also a national suicide hotline you can call 988. |
You're totally right. He deserved it and and so did his parents because they are Indians and you don't like them. Do I have it right? |
They need to sue everyone into oblivion. Including the “patient.” |
| Not being able to cope with stress or manage disappointment is just another outcome of the ridiculous way children are now parented. It see it every day at the school where I work. NO coping skills. Everything has just been smoothed out and snowplowed and catered to them since they were born. No grit. |
No one thinks he deserves it. He killed himself. Everyone wishes he had not done that. There are situations when I think a suicide can be blamed on another person or an institution, for causing harm or failing to intervene. But this isn't one of them. He screwed up, he experienced consequences, he couldn't handle them due to undiagnosed mental illness, and he killed himself. It is a sad story but you can't then blame the institution. If we are going to blame the med school, why not also blame the patient who reported his bad behavior (oh, I see posters on this thread are already doing so). Why not blame his parents (oh we're doing that too). Why not blame other students for failing to befriend him enough to prevent this. Shall we blame every woman who might have dated him but didn't? Why not blame the US immigration system fir failing to help assimilate? Where does the blame end and at what point can we step back and just say "I wish he had not done that but it's not really anyone's fault." |
There are definitely posters in here who are glad he's gone. But, like the Stanford student death, the lawsuit brought about much needed changes as to how universities handle discipline and student mental health, so that's a likely ending here as well. Mistakes were made. |
There is PLENTY of blame to go around here. |
| Unless someone is being targeted or abused (no evidence of that here) a suicide is not the fault of others. |
Stop putting words in my mouth, I think absolutely none of those things. |
Couldn’t disagree more. Some people are mentally unstable. It happens. It’s sad. The end. |
Ok. Or more likely they will adopt new policies vs the pathetic "what can we do!?" https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/5545/text |
This. I have a sibling who has attempted suicide. The triggering events have been frankly normal things. She has a mental illness that makes her catastrophize small things, and that's why she takes prescribed medication. Med changes can also trigger episodes (meds can be less effective over time). It's very common for mental illness to manifest in your 20s. |
This wasn’t a small thing. |
