Since Biden implemented increases in IRS staffing in the auditing and collections area, the IRS has collected ballpark $25B in back taxes, unpaid taxes and penalties since Biden entered office

Do you have a source for this?

I originally heard an article/interview on WTOP, so I don't have the source. However, looking a the IRS summary for FY22:

From https://www.irs.gov/statistics/collections-activities-penalties-and-appeals#:~:text=In%20Fiscal%20Year%20(FY)%202022,transfers%20(Table%2025XLSX).
Highlights of the Data
  • In Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, the IRS collected more than $98.4 billion in unpaid assessments on returns filed with additional tax due, netting about $58.8 billion after credit transfers (Table 25XLSX).

  • The IRS assessed nearly $23.8 billion in additional taxes for returns not filed timely and collected almost $2.3 billion with delinquent returns (Table 25XLSX).

  • In FY 2022, taxpayers proposed 36,022 offers in compromise to settle existing tax liabilities for less than the full amount owed. IRS accepted 13,165 offers, amounting to more than $234.3 million, during the year (Table 25XLSX).

  • I do recall that the person interviewed said that the since the increase in staffing, the IRS has collected more in back taxes than previous years, probably since the slashes to the agency in the Obama and Trump years.

from the 1%-ners or from you and me?

Do you owe back taxes? I don't.

Only going after those who make more than $400k annually. That's not me, is it you? And do you cheat on your taxes?

NP and I think auditing is focused on 400K+ but collections efforts are across the board. I mean people owe and they should pay but just clarifying the point.

Back to the shutdown...what do people think? Only one paycheck left, right?

I'm amazed there has not been more press about the shutdown and the potential to disrupt Thanksgiving travel. If we do shutdown, I see it lasting weeks, not days, because of the extreme political dysfunction.

I can’t imagine the GOP will cause a protracted shutdown over the holidays, especially since they can’t even get 218 votes for an alternative spending proposal. The political damage going into an election year would be high.

This is a very good point.

    Hasn't stopped them yet!

They’ll do a CR with some token additional spending on something like border security.

They did it in the 90s.

House passed the EPA/Interior bill with 40% cuts. Would it be likely for partial shutdown for agencies the house doesn't want to fund at all?

They did it in the 90s.

In the 1990s they were unified on what they wanted and thought (mistakenly) the public would back them. Now they’re in disarray. They haven’t yet gotten 218 votes for anything in the House, and even if they did, the Senate GOP might not be on board. I think enough of them realize deep down they can’t effectively shut down government when they can’t even agree on what their demands should be.

Cutting Ukraine funding is an easy off-ramp since it pisses off the Dems and the establishment Republicans so the House GOP can pretend they got something meaningful. Maybe they’ll deny funds to Israel too and dare the Senate/Biden to cause a shutdown over it.

TLDR: Will we have a shutdown or no?
